Oil Change - how often?

Hey!

My car is going in next week to the dealer for new rear tires (ended up going with the pilot sport ribbed n1s) and I was wondering, I think the dealer recommends an oil&filter change every 15k miles (i have a 2004 4S), is that sufficient? my car has approx 17k miles on it and i've gotten the oil changed at once at 5000 miles and once at 10,0000 miles.... i was wondering should I get another one done when the car goes in tomorrow?

Thanks,

Jason

The optimum oil change approach is to get an oil anaysis of your oil
every so often, and change when they say to (and also react to
any engine problems they warn you about if they find metals). I don't
do that. I just change my oil and filter about every 5000 miles. If
that's too expensive for you, you can do what the dealer says. I would
invest in an oil analysis at 10000 miles, just for the info. If they say
you've got plenty of time left, you can relax.
IMHO.

I have religiously changed mine on my 03 X50 at every 5,000 mile interval and now have 113,000 miles on the ticker - I recommend it only due to the good luck I have had.

3 to 5K. Regardless of the break down of the oil you will still carry contaminates in the system. Acid being one of them! You can't stop this. The recommendation of every 10-15K comes from the EPA and the DOT mandates that required auto makers to cut oil consumption. Instead of making a better widget they simply extended the length of time between changes. The end result was people no longer were filling the landfills and drop off as fast or often. EPA is happy, the car companies get to deal with the maintenance side of it so they are happy.
