Why?
Why?
Why do we buy these things? What was/is it for you? We spend a lot of time washing them, talking about them, paying for them!, why do we do it?
For me its a couple things.
When you use a computer; or a good piece of software you really appreciate it if its well engineered. However, this appreciation is only as far as your keyboard and mouse. You walk away from it.
This has to be one of the first reasons for me. Being part of some of the best engineering our world has ever seen and actually being able to be a part of it and expierence it at the same time.
I think the second biggest thing for me was a commerical with a kid and a poster (Im sure someone will pos it) that reverberated with me. You'll also see this "same thing" when kids look out the back window of their parents 82 black LTD with hubcaps falling off at a beautiful ferrari, porsche or anything else that gives them that passion to want.
I think its easy to get caught up in 1/4 mile times and top speeds (Even though its a part of it
. We must all remember that we were the ones in those back seats and laying in the bed starring at those posters and just saying "wow".

I recall watching Magnum PI back in the days when I was 14. I told my parents that I will have a Ferrari one day... My dream came true

Man, such a deep thought. Why? So many possible answers. You only live once. Life is short. Pick one. For me I guess it started when I was 15. I had a picture of a 928 and a 930 Turbo on my wall. Yea, we spend a lot of time on them. Washing them, modifying them, you name it. We all have goals, dreams, aspirations. The high paying career, the big house, beautiful wife. With all of that comes the stress of everyday pressure, but after a spirited drive (140 mph), I come back a little different. It's like surfing or golf, you really can't think of anything else when you're doing it. It's almost a soul cleanser. When I get back, I feel refreshed, ready to start a new week at the office. If you can't enjoy life, what are we working so hard for?

With a birth year of 1947, I'm probably older than most of you. Teenage years were in the 60's when all hell was breaking loose with the HP wars. 'Was lucky enough to have a stepdad who was a "car guy". 'Learned to drive in a '63 MK3000 Austin Healy and a '60 T-bird with the 460cu Lincoln in it; both his cars. 'Healy was a high school "chick magnet". My own 1st car (summer before senior high school year) was a '55 Chevy Nomad wagon (yes, I was a SoCal surf bum), w/beefed 327, dual quad Chevy and Art Carr 2-speed auto; canary yellow/w custom mahogany paneling in entire interior.
After Navy discharge in 1968, paid $7500 for a '67 427 Cobra. Gawd was THAT a BEAST. After driving the hell out of it for 3 years, sold it for $15,000 to buy my 1st house. Wish I still had it.
'Went on from there to own/mod many different high performance cars; all memorable in their own right. Met my goal of retiring at 55 and bought my current M5 and 996TT, new, within 2 days of each other. Kept both stock until modding M5 19 months ago (soon to be an S3) and 996TT 6 months ago. 'Going to keep both for the foreseeable future 'cause just can't bear to part with either one.
Anyway, the point of all this is we catch the "bug" at an early age and it simply never leaves us. 'Consider this car addiction my avocation; always have. And yes, as a boy, I too remember looking out the back window of my dads' '55 Olds at all the beautiful road machinery. The memories are priceless.

awsome =) i couldn't have said it better myself!!! i remember going to the dealer for the first time last year and the salesrep giving me poster of the 996TT before i left... stupid me put the damn poster on the wall and starred at it everynight before going to bed.... it raised my standards in what i was looking for in a car... hehe... after that, mercedes/bmw/nissan/infinitee.. etc... they all looked kindof plain and boring compared to p-cars..
Simple answer. Lifelong addiction. Present fleet 2003 996tt Evo stage I 9,976 miles original owner, lapis blue/light grey, mint. 2006 c-6 vette daily driver, A-6/f-55 at Lingenfelter's getting a Maggie supercharger installation( traded a 2003 carbon black/caramel M-5 in on the Vette). Just the latest in a long line of fun cars. Love every minute of it. Great hobby!!! No hope for a cure.

I think to many of us getting a Turbo Porsche is the achievement of a lifelong dream.
There is something legendary about a P car. Maybe it's the bulletproof reliability, maybe it's the class leading performance....
Some people may grow up wanting Ferraris or Lambos, but for many real car guys getting a Turbo Porsche is the realization of a dream. We may go on to get Ferraris or Lambos, but the dream has already been achieved.
