First Post... Looking for a p car, ? Reliability of 2001-2002 Turbos...
Hi everyone,
I'm on many other boards and actually am a moderator at AMGPower.com. Own a C55AMG and a Audi A4 heavily modified. I'm at a point where the A4 is going to go in 6months to a year, as it's a fairly pointless car now that we have a C55 around. As many of you probably did, I started out looking at new model 911's that would fit my price range of 50-60k. I didn't notice that the 01/02 911 tt's were even close to my price range so I didn't think to look into it.
Then after talking to some AMG guys, they suggested I look into a 911tt. they felt like it would be coming into my price range next year (when I'm buying) especially now that the 997 tt is out.
I'd love to buy one in a year, but have a lot of questions/concerns. (And yes, I did search and read damn near everypost over the last 6 months.. )
1. Being that I'm a doctor who needs my car to work so I can get to the hospital for emergencies, how reliable are the 996 tt's? Is there a common defect that will not allow it to start? (For example, my A4 has twice not started due to failed ignition coilpacks)
2. How expensive will maintenance for 01/02s that are at around 40-50k miles?
3. When have the turbo's failed? Have they failed quicker with aftermarket modifications?
4. Will porsche sell an extended warranty. Warranty direct does not have a policy for the 911. Warranty direct also happens to be the only CA warranty company I know of.
5. Would I be better off with a 2003/4 996 C4s or a 997 C2 (2005)?
6. How will the 996tt hold up for daily driving, often 10- minute drives 2x a day? (I, unfortuantely, need to be within 10 minutes of hospital)
Thanks for any and all input/suggestions/criticisms! This is a great board and I hope to be a regular contributor down the line.

Welcome to the board.
Ill tell you what I know about them.
Great cars and make amazing daily drivers. Many have reported 100,000km+ on the engine without issues.
Havent heard of any start problems, same with turbo's failing.
Mod wise, if you want to get a P-car dont even think about going for a C2/C4 996, you just cant do nearly as much (unless you want to Turbo it, but then its a 996TT).
Its a good buy because they wont go very much lower then they are right now and may actually come back a little bit.
They are definatly one of the most mod friendly cars you could buy, its on par with the old Supra's.

If you are a horsepower junkie, I wouldn't recommend getting a normally-aspirated car. They are fast compared to the regular street cars but do not have the 'this-car-scares-me' factor that the turbos have.
I've owned 3 Porsches - a 993TT, a 996 Cabriolet, and my latest one coming is a modified 996TT. The 993TT I could've kept forever. The Cab was nice reliable transportation (it was completely stock except for exhaust and clear corner lights) and great for cruising with the top down but I always felt that nothing exciting happened when I floored the pedal (until it was at least near the top of 3rd gear).
If horsepower excites you, then there is no substitute for the turbos. If your idea of a great driving experience doesn't necessarily involve gobs of HP (like most people on this particular forum
...), I'd go for a normally-aspirated car. Personally, I think if you leave the turbo stock, you probably won't have to worry too much about it. My 993TT was driven HARD and the only major things to fail was the clutch (expected, just like the brake pads and rotors), and the ECU (unexpected but Porsche still replaced it!).

Goodluck in finding which turbo fits you best, i know you will be getting one haha. Had mine for almost a year, needed new brake pad's, and fluid changed, wheel bearing, spark plugs and THAT'S IT! All while being modded, this car is bulletproof!

Thanks for the info, thats very reassuring. I'm pretty much a horsepower junkie. I used to own a 2001.5 Audi S4 modified by MTM that was addicting to drive because of those twin scrolls boosting. So yes, I am very much excited about possibly obtaining a turbo.
It all depends on how the prices go over the next year I suppose. If they stay high or higher, than I'd be stretching. But if it comes down to 50-60k, it'll be more than likely.

I noticed that reading the forums that there are a lot of docs. It seems more than most forums I read. Even AMG forums dont' have many docs.
Thanks again everyone!
