Ramone one of the tuners on here can answer your questions better than I can. But I am new to Porsche and purchased a 02 w/ the X50. It was stock and a Tip. at that. I now have Hybrid K24's (Protomotive) and supporting equipment and the lag is less than it was with an 01 with the K16's I test drove; not to mention the huge power gains I enjoy now. I think you should take the expert advice given by sharkster ask around and but your butt in a few set ups and see what you like best.

The GT1 is a hybrid with a standard K16 turbine and standard K24 compressor.

Results:

K16 Car is faster at low end speeds

K24 Car is faster at highway speeds

K24 hybrids > K16 Hybrids
Stock K24 > Stock K16
Hybrid K16> Stock K24

Understand? You want K24 hybrids!!!

K24s hybrids are the way to go... just look at Divirexxtreme 10.6 sec. run at 136 mph.
There are a pair of these turbo set ups running around in NY area... and they beat the stage 4s they came across relatively easy...
Not starting to bash but thats the truth. Just ask William.

Protomotive favors K24/18g hybrids.

K24/18g hybrids are are a better combo than K24/K26's. The size of the 18g compressor is better suited to the 3.6ltr motor running the boost levels we do.

Actually the k24/18g is not the only way... some stuff the garrett gt30r compressors as well. Others liek Kevin do their magic too. The whole point is that k16 housings are too small o produce any meaningful power( relatively speaking)...

I don't understand this "hybrid" stuff

Do you modify the K16 Turbo itself or do you have to buy a whole new turbo setup called a "K16 hybrid" ? Is this a simple mod ? How much are these things ? What are the advantages/disadvantages ? What kind of numbers does a "K16 hybrid" push ? Is this only for extreme setups ie. 600hp plus ?

incase you hadn't guessed it, I'm a newb

Here is a basic simplification:

Every turbos has 2 "fans". The one in the exhaust is called the turbine, the one in the intake is called a compressor.

You can mix and match turbines and compressors from different turbos to get different results.

600HP and below aren't 'extreme' setups on this forum

In fact, a regular x50 with a flash and exhaust gets pretty close to that 600HP number (to the flywheel not to the wheels). Anything over that requires a little bit more (such as better fuel delivery, etc.).

Changing to turbos other than the stock k24 or k16 requires a bigger investment which can be rewarded in more efficiency (higher HP at the same boost levels) and less lag.

Marski is the real deal, i'd listen to him. I have tweaked my X50 a bit and I feel very little lag. I'd go with K24's
