Pros and Cons: K16 Turbos Vs. K24s Turbos
Pros and Cons: K16 Turbos Vs. K24s Turbos
K16 (Turbo) Vs. K24 (Turbo S, X50, and GT2)
As I understand them:
Pros/Cons of K24: Are larger so produce more power than K16s (at same boost levels) but have more lag.
Pros/Cons of K16: Are smaller and as a result have less lag but also less power than K24s.
Are these the main differences between them ?
Why I Ask:
Why I'm asking this is because I already find the car pretty laggy (meaning there is a good deal of time between when I demand the power and when I actually recieve it), so would upgrading to K24's not be a good idea for me then or is there a cure for this?
The reason why K24's seem ideal for me is because they have the potential to produce more power while at the same time saving my warranty. They are a porsche option (X50 package) and so the dealer is less likely to say anything about them. I'm worried tho that I will get frustrated/disapointed with the lag.
Questions:
1) What are the main differences between the two Turbos (K24 vs. K16)?
2) How much laggier are the K24s to the K16s.
3) Is there anything you can do to decrease the lag in either Turbo ?
4) Is it worth it to "upgrade" to the K24 from the K16s ?
5) Why do aftermarket companies sell powerkit "packages" that generate 500+ HP/Torque gains utilizing K16 and K24 turbos without including upgraded intercoolers - when Porsche sells all their K24 turbo cars running 425hp and higher with upgraded intercoolers (ie. TurboS, X50,GT2) ?
Would really apreciate anyone answering my questions. Thanks

In a nutshell... for those that say K24s are laggy.... why is it that I never hear that a GT2 is inferior to a TT? No one ever speaks of GT2s being laggy.... it's only when someone like you wants to upgrade is when they argue that they are laggy... this is a mystery to me.
Dont compare what Porsche recommends to what tuners recommend.. two different stories...
I did 4 tuning kits on my car.. everything from a 500 HP car all the way up to 1000 hp... Im sure some tuners will chime inn soon.
good luck in ur quest for power.

Tarek, once you get the ecu and everything modified these setups become much less "laggy" , comparing stock configuration isnt really fair. My car with K16's isnt laggy one bit....

Not to say it wasnt an amazing car and setup, it is. I was just in a X50 turbo that was basically stg 4, maxed K24's, it was SO SMOOTH and not very laggy at all, and when those turbos hit, boy they hit!

Ramone... it's a little subjective and honestly I could list a bunch of pros and cons on hybrids, k16s and k24s etc... but the best thing would be to try/drive someone elses car (based on where you are that should be easy) with a set up that suits you best in person. I could tell you that my car lags but then other people have said "what lag". See what I mean
?

I think the reason no one complain K24 in GT2 is because there is no K16 to compare. I heard when people replace headers, 100 cel cat. It make the GT2 spool up faster.
Personally, I've drove my friend's X50 with same mod as my non-X50 TT. When I drive it back to back, I found the K24s were laggy. Even when we run our cars, everytime I can jump 2 cars lenght due to spool up time.
No one can tell you which turbo is better, it all depends on how you want your TT. As you mentions your want to stick with factory K16 or K24. City, red light triffic, K16 is your answer. If you do more highway runs, then K24.

Real simple. It is always a slight trade off. Give up a slight amount of spool time for massive top end gains. The K24 frame is the perfect foundation for a high performance turbo. The stock compressor is to small and should be upgraded to approx K26 size. Check with Protomotive he has a great K24 based package that really rocks!!!
So basically this is what I've understood so far....
Hypothetical Situation
K16 Car running (500hp/520tq)
vs.
K24 Car running (500hp/520tq)
Results:
K16 Car is faster at low end speeds
K24 Car is faster at highway speeds

Another question....
Is there a correlation between increased Hp/Tq and decreased Lag ?
Meaning as you push more power out of your TT does the lag of the turbos decrease accordingly or is there absolutely no relationship between the two ie. A 550hp TT will lag at the same rate as a 415hp TT ?
Thanks
