Is this a good deal on an '03 Turbo?

I've always wanted to try out a 996 TT, or any other easy-to-mod FI car for that matter. I was going to try out an EVO but I came to the conclusion that I couldn't resist this German pony (specifically the 996 TT) . I have my eye on this one, especially since it's a local car. I just have a few questions. Is this mileage too high to start off on, for a 996 turbo? I am also paranoid when it comes to buying a used car - mind you I have never acquired a used car in my life. Can I trust this car, especially with it being used? Also, is this price too high or too low for it's condition (from the pics) and mileage? Any cons to buying a used car? Much help would be appreciated, thanks!

I would go with a brand new 997 TT, but after all the things I have read and heard; the 996TT still sounds like it's a more fun car to drive, especially since there are obviously a lot of power mods available for it.

996tt are basically bomb proof so buying used isn't an issue, just get it inspected by a porsche specialist and it'll be fine. And really mileage isn't an issue either, just buy the car on it's condition, if it's in good condition and the servicing is up to date then generally you'll be getting a good car.

But personally I would never buy a tiptronic car for starters, takes the fun out of driving it, and lets face it these cars aren't an investment so buying the youngest car isn't always buying the best car, 2001 turbos are only differnet to the newer models cosmetically, mechanically they are the same so I'd take the 2001 manual with 8k miles over a 2003 with 44k anytime. And if you have been considering a 997tt but prefer the 996tt I'd buy the turbo S.

My 2 cents

I did forget to mention I prefer a tiptronic because I will be using this daily. I drive a Range Rover daily for now, but I don't think all that space is necessary for everyday use, unless I have some stuff to carry around. I know that some of you may be thinking that I have all those other cars in my sig but I'm getting rid of a couple and preserving the others.

As for the Turbo S, I haven't really found any locally to my preference and the reason why I want a local car is because I don't want to deal with shipping and all that other stressful stuff. I AM however, going to continue my search so this TT won't be the for sure final.

If any of you would like to help me search, I'm looking for a tiptronic black 996TT locally around the OC/LA area.

Good luck finding your 996tt! The 03 you posted is pretty high mileage...guessing it was a daily driver. Pricing is pretty optimistic as well. I got my CPO 03 a few months back with 9k for $82 which is still on the high side but it had the colo combo I wanted. Troll through ebay and autotrader to get a sense of current comps. My historic experience (before my current one) regarding reliability and robustness of the car has been quite impressive.

Price seems high for the mileage. As far as the Tip. I have one and contary to what some say the ARE A LOT of fun to drive. I picked up mine 02 X50 with 7,911 miles a few months back for $73,000.00. I would keep looking and if possible hold out for the X50/ S option. Good luck.

Good morning, sorry about the tiptronic dig, it's a personal choice. If you use the car as a daily drive commuting in heavy traffic then I can understand why you'd want one.

So here's 4 I found just on a quick look, don't know about the reputation of anyof the dealers so they are just ideas to check out.

I would be careful dealing with these guys. My buddy bought an 03TT EVO Stage IV from them in July. I flew out there to help pick it up. The car had PSM lights, bald tires, bad stereo and some other items. I didn't realize this until I got there but my buddy had already sealed the deal. I asked them why the PSM and they said it is standard with all modded TT.

Not trying to give them a bad name but just buyers beware.

Thanks for all the help guys. As you can tell, I'm not great at knowing how much certain TTs are worth - as to knowing what's too high or too low.

Lounge Lizard, thanks for the results you came up with. Really helps out a lot.

hkdude, were you referring to DC Motors?

Mileage may seem high, but it all depends on the deal you get, the condition and what you plan to do with it. People are paranoid about high mileage, but sometimes for the wrong reason. A friend of mine has more than 162Kmi on his TT (no typo, 162'000 miles) and the car is still gorgeous. Engine got changed at 230'000km because the main seal started to leak, the gearbox gave up last fall on the Nordschleife, but aside from that, no problems. Oh and the car now has a Sportec Stage 3 kit.
Higher mileage can be a pain when you'll want to resell, but if you trade in or intend to keep the car, I would not diregard the opportunity.
