The Veyron does it all without headache, issues or anything which is what is so impressive and amazing in a car that has the performance figures it does.
martin, you should def know about this with your previous car in the M3!

At least we agree that a 5.5 second 0 to 60 time in 1992 was only achieved by a handfull of automobiles.
You are right, so wait are we including supercars? How about the 964 Turbo, Lamborghini Diablo/Countache from 89, Testarossa, even those cars were at the 5 sec 0-60 mark or higher, diablo maybe being under but still!

LOl Greg and why i mentioned it. At my level i had horrible experience and an undriveable car basically on the street, i couldnt imagine what a 1khp TT Viper would be like, and why i mentioned its like crusiing in my G35 for the Veyron, that sort of reliabiity, comfort and ease to drive meanwhile murdering every production car out there and 98% of the modified cars LOL!

I can't find anything on the net that cites those times for alot of the cars you indentified. I can't find them.
Look harder then.

I read it the first time. If it doesn't matter to you, then I guess it doesn't matter. I'm not trying to disprove anything since you haven't proven anything. My statement still stands, and I believe you're in agreement. In 1992, 0 to 60 in 5.5 seconds was achieved by very few non-supercar automobiles, regardless of a few tenths in either direction.

on that point, we also have to remember that "streetcar" and "daily driver" mean different things for different people. A Veyron is street legal. VRAlex's and Markski's cars are street legal. A Radical SR3 Turbo is street legal. Ryan Woon's Supra is, I think, street legal. And so is that 2,200HP monster (in the UK anyway) that someone posted up a few pages back.

"Street legal" IS an objective criterion, but I find it so broad that it isn't of very much use.

Even saying a car is a "daily driver" opens up a huge can of worms. I have a friend whose car is stripped of all sound deadening, full welded cage, lexan windows, no rear seat, hard as nails competition coil-overs, straight pipe exhaust, and no aircon (if you've ever lived in a tropical country, and have sat in rush hour traffic at high noon without an A/C, you'll appreciate what a sacrifice this is,) all in the pursuit of saving weight. he says it can be used as a daily driver.

we've all probably seen highly tuned cars with built engines that require you to wait a few minutes so that the engine warms up and starts to idle normally. and of course there are the competition clutches are both super heavy, and very difficult to modulate when getting moving from a traffic light.

many such cars are daily drivers.

could you go grocery shopping in these cars? sure. take someone out on a date? probably (depending on your date!) go on a long roadtrip up to the mountains for the weekend? i suppose so.

many people won't put up with any of the inconveniences mentioned above however. and some on here have seen both sides, or moved on from having a massively tuned street legal road rocket, with some compromises to reliability or everyday comfort and convenience, to a car that may not be as extreme, but is still pretty darn fast.

its really all down to personal choice, and what we're willing to put up with. i realize that makes comparisons between cars-- especially tuned cars, and doubly so over the internet-- very difficult. but hey, there you go

To me a daily driver with enormous amount of power is a car that has AC, no roll bars... starts up every time( not all do due to huge cams)... and doesn't shake like my cloths washer.....
OH.. and it has to be able to run on pump gas...

And my daily driver goes out once a week. Usually very, very early on Sunday morning. Yeah, it starts with extra batteries, doesn't shake but lopes, and runs on barrel gas.

I'm not taking sides here, but for the purpose of information...the below link contains the most comprehensive list I've seen so far of 0-60 times.

If you scroll down to Toyota, it shows a 4.6 run for a Supra by C&D in 1993. Also noticed a NSX at 4.8 in 1992, a 3000GT at 5.2 in 1991, a 300ZX in 5.2 in 1993, a Buick Grand National in 4.7 in 1987, a Pontiac Firebird Firehawk in 4.9 in 1993, and quite a few Porsches under 5.5 before 1993.

That was only a cursory glance. The list is pretty huge so I'm sure there are a quite a few more.

very interesting reading on this thread shouldn't you guys be discussing more of sparing the oil so I can have some fun when I'm older and got a supercar (in my dream) ? the fiat panda is a nice car isn't it?

thinking of 200mph+ cars I remembered of playing gran tursimo 3. I got this Suzuki 1998 Escudo (Pike's peak version) and put the biggest turbo charger in it...effect: 1800bhp
280mph and 0-300 in 6 secs ?? I don' t think that was so realistic
anybody heard of this car?

Back on topic the Veryon is a factory stock production car, no other car can touch it when put in those terms. End of story!

I still think it is ugly and heavy!

Oh yeah? Top Gear just broadcast their top speed attempt in one tonight:

407kph CONFIRMED

Wow, that's crazy they were allowed to take one out like that (on the VW test track with a 5mile long straight).

Who's gonna beat that?

Yeah, it just aired a few minutes ago here in London. It will probably be on YouTube shortly.

The best part is who they had drive it: James May
