Smile Need some help from you stereo gurus.....

I know there are probably some outrageous stereo systems that people have put in their 996 TTs. Well, here's your chance for bragging rights!!

I am pondering about upgrading the stock Bose system with Nav, and I need your input!

Here are some of the questions I am looking to get answered:
1) Where are your aftermarket amps mounted/where are the original stock amps mounted?
2) What size speaker comes stock in the doors, dash, and rear with the Bose system? What size components did you upgrade with?
3) What about subwoofers? Where did you mount them, what size did you go with?
4) Are there any 'bugs' or Porsche specific problems people have run into?
5) Is the alternator up to the task or do you need an upgrade?

I am not looking to go wild (like I did with my Viper), but something with Dolby digital 5.1, Xbox, 8" lcd screen, and at least 5-6 speakers is definitely plausible.

Let me hear about your systems.....
THANKS!!

I removed the bose and installed one 8 inch woofer where the Bose was. I replaced all the speakers with AVI tri star which is one of the best component sets out there. Far superior to MB quart and Reus. I have an Audision 6 channel amp that puts out 200 X 4 and 300 into 1. I also have XM which is great. I removed my spare tire and that is where I have the amp installed.I have had no problems with the alternator or battery. I have had this for two years and not had one problem.

Reus does a great job with everything from the bose upgrade to a full blown system. They are top notch.

Thanks Duane....

Can you tell me more about your speaker setup?
I am not familiar with AVI. Usually, I prefer Dynaudio or MB Quart. In addition, what made you choose this amp? I am not as familiar with Audision either; usually I have had good success with Phoenix Gold, Soundstream, and Precision Power.

What size speakers did you use and where did you place them? Should I assume you used the 8" sub in a custom box in place of the Bose sub unit?
Now starts my learning process about the 996TT.......
Thanks for your help and insight!

AVI mostly makes home audio. They are a very small niche company located in Canada. AVI is very selective about thier dealers. There is no comparision between Reus,MB quart and dynaudio. I have done numerous systems through the years and had everything from MB quart to Focal and nothing comes close to AVI. However the AVI speakers are much more expensive than the MB quarts and dynaudio. As far as the amp goes Audision is another very high end company. They are located in Italy and no longer import thier products to the states. I bough the amp 3.5 years ago for $2800.00, I had it in my old turbo and decided to transfer into my 2002 turbo. I am sure there are much more compact amps now that produce the same power. AVI's websitre is http://www.avisound.com/links.htm It is not updated but give them or one of thier dealers a call.

Thanks for all the input already....
I have a question for the Reus guys out there....

It seems that all of you feel strongly about the Reus system.
Just to play devil's advocate here....
With all of the press about car audio (some magazines are devoted to it), why have I never heard of Reus audio speakers winning events and contests? I have definitely seen the dominance of MB Quart or Dynaudio, but I honestly have never run into Reus. So my question is: If they have a niche reputation, how could they match the R&D dollars that the mainstream speaker manufactuers have.

In addition, what amplifiers does Reus use? Is it their own brand also? If this is the case, then use my same argument for speakers and apply it against using ADS, Precision Power, Phoenix Gold, JL audio, etc...

I guess I am confused....I don't want you guys to take my comments the wrong way, but I guess I would be lying if I didn't say I am somewhat skeptical...

Thanks!!

As far has Reuss goes they do not make thier own speakers. They have someone make the speakers for them. Reus is great in sense that they have a system that works very well in the 996. It goes in and out with ease. I am not trying to knock them but what you are mentioning i.e dynaudio, mbquart you would be disspointed with the sound IMO. I would try to here someone who has it installed and judge for yourself. If you are in MIami you can here mine.

Duane-
Thanks again for your input. I will see if someone locally has the Reus system and give it a listen to....

Regarding your system:
What size speakers did you install in the doors, dash, rear? Any idea on what size the stock Bose speakers are, and what size replacement speaker will fit comfortably in these spaces without too much modification (minimal/no cutting)?

Thx.

i would TOTALLY disagree with what he is saying!!! i have had mb quart and dynaudio's in my 2 m5's and x5 truck reus BLOWS THEM AWAY hands down ESPECIALLy in the area that the dyns and mb quarts are supposed to shine and thats in the tweet and mid range catagory!!!
with the mirror tweeters that reus has and their designs theres is no more naturally sounding system IVE heard for the 996. now as far as bass goes it is possible i believe to excel in this area from reus IF u are looking for a BOOM BOOM system.... IF your looking for a system that sounds natural and will hit u in your lower back and move your hair then u woudl do yourself right going with the reus system BUT u would have to do their enhanced subwoofer design..talk to rick at reus...but hands down the highs and mids and they way reus does there work they are unmatched for the 996.

RacerX,

WIth all due respect, I disagree with that selection. Reus is for audiophiles - if you plan on listening to the imperfections of a violin bow, or if you want to hear the violinist fart.

Personally, I Had that reus, and was dissastisfied with the sound quality. I listen to some classical, but mostly classic rock, alternative, and club/dance/techno. I have heard Duane's system and the top of line Reus, and the reus does not come close. No way in hell.

I also went with aftermarket. They put the two amps in the hood, two subwoofers behind the seats (Gt2 here) and alpine top of line head unit with matching amber lights. XM Radio, and MB Quarts all around, with JL Audio Subs, and Xtant Amps. The sound is crisp, no matter the music, and can go super loud, though I prefer to keep my ear drums. I also hear the benefits of the Rues'ists - can hear the cello bow strokes, and I almost thought I heard YO YO MA pass a silent one.

Ryan's car sounds awesome! That system is really unreal. Now, if you are interested in the Reus system I have Ryan's original setup with the amps I would sell. I originally was going to put it in my car, however I really don't want the weight . Besides, I can't hear like I use to
