I am upgrading from stage 4 to 4GT next week and was wondering what percentage of six speeders with stage 4GT upgraded their clutch? From what I have read the upgraded clutch is louder and feels less smooth.

I purchased a clutch / flywheel from Stephen with the 4GTR stuff. I had done a number on the stock clutch and was certain it would have been completely written off withing hours of the installation of the power upgrades!

Dan, I have a 996TT at our facility with the lightweight flywheel & Stage 4GT. You can drive and hear it so you can see first hand the pros and cons to this system. See you soon.

We need to apply the same diligent homework to upgrading clutches as we do to our motors. Everyone can say how much hp or torque we produce however, I never hear anyone say how much hp/torque their clutch is rated for. Most of us are buying "an upgraded clutch," "a Sachs Racing clutch," " a single mass clutch," or "a Stage ? clutch." Sounds good, I guess?

Most of the time we don't have the foggyest idea what we are really buying. What is the pressure plate ratio? Does it provide a long or a short release travel? What are the rates of the diaphram springs? What is the diameter of the discs? What materials are the discs made of? How many discs are there? What kind of disc is it? How easy is it to rebuild? What kind of maintance does it require? What applications of use does the manufacturer suggest? HOW MUCH TORQUE IS THE SET UP I'M BUYING DESIGNED TO HANDLE?

There are companies out there who can answer these questions. Tilton is not the only one, however in my opinion one of the the better ones. www.tiltonracing.com Take a look at their website, you will be impressed.

Warning, clutches that are capable of reliabily running with Big Dog power are not 1K or 2K clutches. At a minimum, get the facts and figures. You wouldn't want a clutch rated for 500 foot pounds of torque hooking up a 600 foot pound motor to the ground..... or do you?

Dr,

I have not had a clutch augmentation. I did not think it was necessary, however many people like bigger clutches. I go by the overall looks.

I am wasted, i have no idea what I am talking about. Whats up.
How are things. I am fine. Bye

I've been wondering why the stock clutch is so small in diameter. Is it limited by a small diameter flywheel? A conventional 11.5 inch diaphragm single disk clutch with about 2500# clamping force should be adequate for most highly modified turbos.
Are Tilton's streetable? Racing oriented clutches i've used shuddered a lot and engauged suddenly.
Are the upgraded clutches offered by imagine and others larger diameter?

KPV,

You would want the 7-1/4" carbon/carbon clutch. Three disc and Ultra heavy pressure plate. Go to the carbon/carbon clutch and then clic on for information. You can also give them a call. They are very helpful.

The Sachs full size GT2 PP has 1100NM of clamping force (when mated with a proper clutch) of around 800 lb-ft of torque. Hmmm, this might do for most folks. And it works in a nice daily driver...
