Stage 2 and Smog Test

I have an 01TT and had Sharkwerks take it to stage 2 w/ AWE exhaust, EVO headers, DV's and VFlow intake. And GIAC ECU. Took it down to get it smogged yesterday at the local place. The guy looked at my beauty and said, "well, if it's been modified I'm not touching it." I told him it hadn't been, except for the intake and well, the exhaust. He frowned at me and said pop the the hood. I did. He looked the VFlow over and said the intake needs to say that it is CARB certified to pass smog. He couldn't find it and then told me he couldn't pass it. I told him it was definited certified because the local dealer installed these items. OK, I lied, but the dealer did tell me back then that they WOULD install them, I just decided to have Alex/James do it.

So the guy says it's gonna take 15 minutes for his smog machine to warm up and that he'll try it. Then I realize the GIAC flash is active, so I tell him I need to run around the corner to the drug store and will be RIGHT BACK before his machine warms up. I park at the drug store and plug in my GIAC flash changer under the dash and change from PUMP to STOCK. Then, back to the shop.

So my turbo passes, no problem, whew!

Also, he mentioned that beginning 2008 all cars will need to pass an EVAP test to pass smog. What the hell is that?

Anyone have smog-test problems w/ their TT?

Also, what is a CARB certification on the intake? Does the VFlow have it?

Great info...as I have the same setup from Alex/James. Heck, maybe I can talk Alex into doing smog inspections for us all.

CARB is California Air Resources Board. All aftermarket parts that are supposed to be street legal have to be certified through this board before they are allowed to be installed on street driven cars. It's a pain for the tuners to go through the testing procedure, so that's why you'll see most tuner parts sold with a sticker that says something to the effect of "Only to be used on cars which may never be driven on the street."

You were lucky. Obviously the tech didn't know Porsche turbo's or you would have failed the visual .......... headers.

It is pretty hard for even a modified Porsche to fail the sniffer test. I have found that using larger injectors without changing to "Peak and Hold type injectors" will more often than not cause a fail with the sniffer.

it's very hard for an AWD porsche to fail b/c you don't have to get on the rollers.

in general, you don't have to worry - however, why go w/ what might be the only "obvious" part - the intake? take the 1/2 hour to switch it out.

Damn! What a finicky guy! What I do is remove the EVO logo from the airbox and that way nobody knows Also... on the Flash, don't worry. It passes just fine with that. In fact, GT700 cars pass the emissions test just fine with different injectors etc... Seems like that guy was super-fussy but within his rights.
