996 Turbo / GT2 Turbo discussion on previous model 2000-2005 Porsche 911 Twin Turbo and 911 GT2.

For you RUF experts, what is the difference between the 550bhp engine and the 590?

For you RUF experts, what is the difference between the 550bhp engine and the 590?

It sounds very interesting, but for 29000 euro quite expensive, is it worth it over the 550bhp?

Also are there different turbos used?

I think that the 590 uses K24's. Does the 550 use K24's also?

Anyones thoughts on the engine is appreciated

TIA

Don`t no about the K24, but engine has titanium connecting rods, new camshafts, headers, new injectors, work done to the cylinder heads, more work done to air intake, different exhaust + more. The engine conversion takes 2 weeks + 1 week for extensive testing.

Drop an email to RUF and ask them. They're very prompt in their response.
Whever I asked them somthing with 24 or 48 hours I got an answer.

One difference I am aware of (other than the obvious) is that one has to send the car to Germany to have the 590 HP version done. And as and earlier poster stated, it includes alot of internal engine work to stay alive with that much power.

Well Artoo, only advice that I can give you is to try some other tuners and get their quotes for 550, 590 HP. Hell, for the above parts you mentioned, you should be at high 600 's for HP at minimum.

There are companies that can easily give 600 to 630 HP without even opening the motor.

Oh , and so you know, We tested one of those 590 deals from RUF, and a Sportec 650 car in Puerto Rico a few weeks ago. As I mentioned to Tod from Evo, one of his cars and 2 of ours kept up to the others being only half a car behind. Tod's car and ours, a program, airfilter and sport exhaust..... nothing more.

Really hard to get what you pay for sometimes .......... no ??

Theo,

I find it hard to understand how your cars with only an upgraded ECU, airfilter and an exhaust could match the performance of the top Ruf offering. For this to be the case, one would have to believe that the engineers at Ruf are incompetent fools when compared to your people and Todd's. I am not trying to take anything away from Giac/Todd and whoever you use for programing/etc. However, it is unbelievable to me that your aforementioned simple upgrades will match the performance of a Ruf with upgraded engine internals, turbos, programing, exhaust, intake, etc.

Hey John. I could not understand it either when I was told of this. The guys did quite a few runs to confirm the results ....... so they said.

Then I fly down there , same track, drivers and all, to see whats going on first hand. All I can say is that I suggested to the RUF and SPORTEC car owners is to take everything out that was put in, and try someone else. Oh yeh, they had K-24 turbos, sport exhaust, program, GT2 intercoolers....... We checked all the cars about a hundred times.

But if I have not seen or experienced it myself, yes,..... I would find it hard to believe. Only HALF A CAR AHEAD !!!!

I am flying back there on the weekend of the 26th at there other track for a private driving event. The track is a little bigger than the one in Ponce. From what I heard, the RUF & SPORTEC cars will be there.

I guess perhaps the real test is how long it all lasts and stays together, Alois reputation is 40 years old and if you drive an early BTR car like I just got, its still doing exactly what they had set out for it to do...in 1989....24 years later and going strong and holding value as a result.
most Ruf car owners love their cars and want a long term solution to driving pleasere and realiable bhp. ALL of our clients who have upgraded their cars have had zero problems almost none of them have sold their cars...speaks volumes...
cheers

I find that really hard to believe. I suggest that you guys try an enduro or something cause if your pushing stock turbos to about 600hp, I doubt it would last more than a couple days. It comes down to physics after a certain point.

I think there have been many tests performed on the RUF cars and despite their claims of 550 hp & 590 hp, their cars turned out 540 & 590 to the WHEELS. I have no doubts that a RUF 590 will run with many of the stage 4+ cars of the other manufacturers. I think RUF (like Porsche) is somewhat conservative on their numbers. Also RUF is not the only one that does internal motor mods at 640+ hp. I read the Techart 911 has them too. I think it is a safety/endurance recommendation. Many of the tuners that you mention do top notch work, RUF is definitely one of them.

Theo, I'd like to see your car run against the Protomotive Turbo. You will find yourself way more than half a car behind. Just ask Todd Z.

The Ruf Nardo package is just about as strong as the Protomotive car. My friend test drove them back to back, my old blue turbo and then the Ruf car. My car was only running 1.0 bar at the time, which is about 650hp. Whoever was driving the Nardo 590 car in Puerto Rico either must have had some mechanical problems or did not push the pedal all the way to the floor.
