Modified OEM Muffler 996TT

nice, look like Evo's. Did you cut out the clams too? I'm wondering if there are any heat issues? If someone figures out how to stuff the C4S PSE mufflers in, I'm buying! That sound is beyond glorious. I've had fellow porsche followers compliment me on the rumble.

I believe that was a smart choice. Just wonder how it sounds, versus stock and the two holer like my mod.

that is one clean car. How many pounds of dead weight are removed? What is your impression of the sound difference?

Drone
Lost 19 lbs. My initial impression is that it drones too much. The sound is louder, but not really "better". We've drilled some holes and fabbed a tube to connect both sides and support it on the factory mounting tabs. I haven't been able to drive it like that yet, but it sounds better in the shop, the pitch has risen somewhat. I'll drive it soon and then we are planning on adding some resonators to reduce the drone..

Videos
We took some video. Not the best conditions for sound but it's a start.

It seems incredibly difficult to make or mod any exhaust for the Turbo that has a terrific and pleasing sound that most everyone loves. In the years I've been here there have been threads about exhausts and mufflers, many people have built them from scratch, modded existing ones and such. It seems the very best outcomes, were varying degrees of acceptability, none that I remember, being absolutely terrific, or as good as it gets, etc.
On second thought, maybe some are "as good as it gets" on a Turbo, which isn't nearly as good as a PSE, a shop built or home made replica on a C2, C4 N/A. The N/A PSE shunted mufflers or even a reasonable DIY copy has a very pleasing intoxicating sound that sounds as authoritative, highly tuned, and exactly what one would want. In a Cabriolet, on a summer day, with top down, one would get giddy and actually start to giggle and feel childish in a reaction to the sound. It sounded that good! I know, I lived it for 7 years.
I think other owners of N/A 996 can attest to that. With the turbos chopping up and destroying the sound waves exiting the exhaust ports, I don't believe there is any way to get a similar sound to that of the flat 6 N/A motor. If there was, I would have installed it years ago.

I'm with you Nick, PSE is awesome. Never thought of the turbos as sound attenuators, but indeed they do radically change the direction and pressure wave of gas flow through the pipes.

Thought I'd post an update on our progress. We added the connector pipe to help with the tone a week or two ago, but the drone was too much between 2200 and 3000 rpm. Today we had a chance to add some closed tube resonators to help reduce the drone. It helped significantly between 2200 and 2600, above 2600 rpm the drone is almost completely gone. Sounds pretty good. We have one more mod to do on the oem exhaust. Hopefully sometime next week.

Final Mod
Some pics of the last mod to the oem exhaust. Completely removed the secondary cat and opened up the outlet to 3-1/2" with polished stainless tips, nothing fancy. Yes, I'm pretty sure it will be too loud and I will soon be putting the original exhaust back on the car. I will be logging another acceleration run with the vbox before it comes off.
