Modified OEM Muffler 996TT
I think I finally found my 996tt. Ive been looking for over two months and think this is the one. Going to see it tomorrow in person. I'd really like to see pics as well maybe I'll do the same till I decide which exhaust to go with. If you'd like you could email them to me at willie3107@yahoo.com. Thanks really appreciate it.
Looks like I'll be attempting the TJW exhaust mod very soon. I too wanted an aftermarket exhaust but the inability to hear them prior to installation, drone horror stories and some of their stratospheric price$ has this low-cost option looking pretty good for now. I'll post pics and thoughts as soon as it's done...
WoW! Got it done by my local Porsche mechanic and just WoW! 1100 - 2600rpm sounds beastly! They made some nice 2" egress holes and I couldn't be happier for the cost of an hours+ worth of labor. I was driving in downtown Atlanta tonight and I swear this exhaust draws far more attention to my car than the anemic stock exhaust ever did. The only hint of drone is exactly 2100 rpm in gears 3,4,5 and 6. It's not unbearable at all but this rpm was all I was able to discern as far as a drone zone. All other rpm's simply sound more aggressive. At 1st I was wondering if I'd want for more sound because I had my top and windows up but when I rolled my windows down, a big
to my face. This is how these cars should sound from the factory at minimum... Thanx TJW!
Guys are right about the acceleration having a little more thrust. I accelerated aggressively in 2nd gear and felt like I was about to peel/break the rear wheels; I never noticed such affect before. I didn't test acceleration extensively as I didn't want to chance a ticket. I will say my car had a prior ECU remapping but none since the TJW exhaust mod. Now I can concentrate my future upgrades on other performance mods.

I just bought a 996tt that the previous owner had done this mod.. I get significant drone maybe because the hole is almost 2" on each side..
I will be dropping down for a quiet performance exhaust because I prefer the sleeper effect.. Welcome to suggestions.

Seriously? There is practically NO drone when this is completed. I drilled the largest holes I could when I had the stock system on and still had VERY little drone.
Sound is very personal...it has been said that almost all systems have some drone, even a europipe quiet...even the stock system.. The stock is the best, Ruf and EP are good too. The new "Ruf esque" system by Ken are supposed to be superb. My Switzer is sublime..it sounds like a gt3 to me (as do most of the crossovers, so the ones by Markski and John of Speedtech fall into this....).
Anyway, there is no way 100% of people will be happy with any exhaust out there. Some are horrible. I'll leave you to search on those. I had a Billy Boat (sp?) on a 993 that was too much for me.
To the recent person, stock may be what you want...check out and EP quiet and perhaps a Ruf/PBK system. Those are quiet(er). For the price, this mod is amazing.

I agree, I got no drone with mine.
I have a fully gutted stock exhaust I'm thinking about selling. Gutted it myself the proper way by cutting it open prying out all four cats and welding it all back shut. But I DID NOT do the drilled out sound mod so its maybe slightly louder than stock as the cats are gone, maybe.
I didn't mess with the sound damping effect of the oem system, I wanted a sleeper higher flowing system as well. Tony at epl said he did this as well to his personal car as he wanted to be able to talk on his cell while commuting to work, and you get about 80% of what a performance exhaust gives you without the drone, look at me systems.
It was nice but now I want more sound, ya I know I'm a contradiction, if anybody is interested let me know, it takes several hours to cut, pry and weld this all back together saves you the time plus you can still use your oem system for emmissions or having down time gutting your own system. Haven't listed it yet just contemplating it. You would be amazed how big the tubing is after you remove the cats.
