From what i've read , sounds like the torch is the way to do it easily, rather than wrestling with multiple bits and sizes. Can anyone tell me how much diff it makes for highway quietness on longer drives? ..
I'm thinking of 1" to start.

Another happy customer.

I know this thread is ancient but I just wanted to give another vote in favour of this TJW mod. I was going to do it last night with a hole saw but chickened out at the last moment. Today I went for it and it took me 3 min with a torch, cutting two holes the size of golf *****. The sounds level is maybe only 25% more than stock; but the tone is deep at idle and very nice when in motion with the windows down. With them up the change is barily noticeable in sound level but the car does feel more special as the tone is now more appropriate for the car. Also the car feels slightly more responsive and for the first time I had the traction control light blinking at me when I got on it from a second gear roll - she must be putting a bit more HP to the wheels as was shown in the dyno results done a few years back.

Thanks to those who discovered this free mod and to those who posted with their own experience. I would have never dreamed of doing this to my beloved car without the reassurance that many had done it sucessfully in the past.

Did this mod last night and am very happy. The sound is much deeper and I would say about 35-40% louder than stock but with a much deeper tone. We did it using the ARC welder methos and it went very smoothly. The only issue we had was the bolts holding the tips on were seixed and snapped so we had to drill and re-tap them. That took 10 times longer than the mod itself.

Here is a before and after video. Unfortuatly the mic on my camera did not do a good job of poicking u p the sound so the video is not that great.

First off...its really nice having a collection of enthusiasts like yourselves. I humble myself to the group. A real pleasure. Secondly great mod. Thirdly however (and I didn't read all 30 someodd pages of this, and I realize live sound vs. internet videos may have a wide range of differentiation) but this mod's end results sound affectionately similar to the X-50 stock exhaust. Has an X-50'ers noticed the same thing...I am probably an idiot for posting this...and has any X-50'ers performed this mod or similarly noticed the sound sound quality similarities? Please don't bash me to hard....just a noob here, and trying to figure out if I would consider this mod for myself.

Is the exhaust on X50 cars different from normal turbo? I thought it was just the turbos that's different? (in terms of whats in the exhaust that could impact sound that is)..

Your still getting around 6psi or so before the cats not a good idea.

Buy upgraded exhaust.

The restriction is the cats and its smaller then 2 inch pipes and the mufflers. The whole thing is a restriction plus it has over 10 psi of back pressure.
