Hi Ray. Richard has been running one of our systems now for a few months. I'm sure he will chime in for you with his experience when he gets a chance.

 

I ended up to the solution in the pic below. 4" 100 cell cats, 3½" muffling section and 3" outlets. Amazingly quiet, just low, deep rumble. See my previous posts (424 & 425) for starting point.

Pete's previous posts 424 & 425: Thanks Pete, great. But do you know, if the X50 / GT2 Muffler has the same things inside? Where is the difference between Stock 996 TT Muffler and X50 / GT2 Muffler? Maybe, the X50 / GT2 has less material in it.

Sorry but no, I don't know. I do have a X50 muffler in my backyard, but I can't open it because it's not mine... My guess is that cats are similar, as well as pipe diameters, but those 45mm pipes that run through muffling section are fully open at their ends.

 

Hello Ray, strange that you ask that regarding the Cops/Police, I was in a routine road check last week and they noticed the Speedtech exhaust as it has no TUV it has to come off and soon will be for sale. Pity as a love it

its not true? really? Strange, there are several Porsches in Switzerland, who are driving with a Catalytic or muffler bypass kits (race pipes). Thats why i am searching for a muffler or modification, who has OEM Design. Aftermarket mufflers with good sound will stand out and will attract like a magnet our police on the road.

in fact in switzerland it is a big problem to drive with an exhaust which has not a TUV approval. But normally police will not check any porsches on the road - they prefer more cars like Evo's or Impreza's.
Do you get a ticket for that? I think you have to place the original back and bring it to the police to sho it.

Purchased my 2001 996TT two weeks ago; owned 45 cars in my life, this is my first Porsche. What an idiot, should have bought one of these 20+ yrs ago. I wanted more sound, not too worried about more performance. The original owned had my car tuned with a 0.9 bar chip (probably not saying that correctly); runs very fast. I made the 1 1/8" holes in the exhaust, I like it! I want to enlarge the size of the holes, but cannot find a stepbit any larger. What type of bit/tool have others used to make a 1.5-2.0" hole? Thanks!

 

I did the step bit thing and it wasn't enough.
Last week I took my stick welder and turned up the amperage.
It burned though in a heartbeat and I was able to make the holes
as big as I wanted and they are actually quite clean.
Scary as hell at first though.

 

Hmmm interesting, I already had a loud aftermarket on mine when I got it. I switched to a quieter one. Lol.

 

Hi jcb memphis,just bought my 996 tt,a week ago,want to do the oem muffler mod since i have the oem exhaust.My question is how deep should i go for the hole,thanks

What kind did you have ? Wandering.... Been contemplating this mod forever, but was worried i might wreck it's highway quietness if i go this route.

 

Done it today with my 2004 996 TT,big improvement in deep sounds,cant bring here out yet due to typoon,but i feel i made the right size hole,its more than 2" using torch tip.

 

What do you mean how deep should you go?

There's only a question of how large you make it not really how deep...

 

I have bits that go up to 2" or larger, but the main problem I'd worry about is whether the tip of the bit would go too deep and hit the exhaust piping on the other side before it got to the larger section of the bit. You can get larger bits online or have them specially ordered at any auto parts store. They're not usually something they have in stock, but they can get them from their catalogs they keep behind the desk.
