Anyone else have this problem - car only has 3500 miles on it - not the biggest deal but still concerns me a bit - Car is an 02 x50

It has happened 3 times in 2 days - about 4 hours of driving

Sounds like a worn syncro. Do you drive around with your hand on the shifter? That's a no, no.

Darren, I see it is your car. Could have been the prior owner.

Samething here, at approx 5500Km. There was a known problem with late 01 models. It should take less than 2 weeks to get a new tranny.

Do they replace the entire tranny or just fix a specific piece inside?

They should swap Tranny for a new one if car is under warranty. As far as repair goes it would be considerable job. Mainshaft 1st and 2nd gear change at a minimum.

Yes Darren, holding on to the stick while just driving along will wear your syncro's. People don't realize that when they hold on to the stick they are usually slightly pushing or pulling.

Another way is to over rev the bronze syncro's on a downshift.

Geez, I hold on to my shifter too when I drive, but I thought it was just a guy thing. You know, like putting your hands down your pants when you're watching sports! Never thought it could wear out my suncros!

Not to refute what people were saying, but the problems answer used to be replace the whole tranny, as the parts that were needed for replacement were in short supply and it was just easier to ship a whole assembled tranny instead of parts that could've been used for a new car. (Doesn't make total sense to me, but it iswhat I was told anyway)
The current answer is to pull the worn parts and replace by the master tech at the dealership. This is one reason why my car ended up lemoned.

Anyway this is straight from a service bulletin that I read when I questioned the same thing at my dealership. (that techs were now given permission to tear down the trans to replace)

However, take what I say with a grain of salt, as I have still heard of dealerships replacing the whole tranny instead of tearing it down.

As Chad said, sounds like worn synchros. I had the problem about 5 years ago on a 540i sport I owned. They replaced the entire tranny instead of finding the source of the problem. Idiots, oh well, I was happy.
