Why doesn't Porsche have an F1 team?
Re: Why doesn't Porsche have an F1 team?
I agree it would be fabulous, as they haven't been fully involved since the early 60's, though I guess they've had some engines in F1 in the 80's. There are some new rumors though:

F1= mucho mucho dinero aka... very expensive even by motorsport standard. It is the most expensive form of motorsport and Porsche would only enter if they could be competitive and win. It would cost Porsche an obscene amount of money to develope a competitive car and that is asking a lot for a small car mfg. Why do you think Porsche has not gotten into top level endurance racing... think they have the funds to compete against the all dominating Audi R8's?
You do notice the date on that article is 8/29/02.

Why would Porsche get involved in F1?
I'm a hardcore racing fan, and yet I'm sure professional racing as we see it is coming to an end. Back in the days, racing was the only way to show off your car. Today ... look at Mazda. They don't participate in any major racing league, and yet, they have a sport image. Publicity through medias is the best bet today. If you had to choose between a several years F1 racing program (with your best result giving you a page in the sports section, right after the results of midget basketball), and loaning your cars now and then to movie purposes (S7 and Gillette, S8 in Ronin ... etc etc) with millions of people seeing it, with such a controllable result (you know what your product is gonna look like, vs. racing) and image?
And anyways, race cars are so elaborate and restricted that there is very little that is learned that can be used for street use ...
I really see racing coming back to an amateur/enthusiast within several years. I wouldn't mind.

Trending Topics
Formula 1 is a fantastic international phenomenon, and I've enjoyed it for years. I believe that popularity of the sport, while not as intense in the USA, is still one of the world's most widely watched sporting events. It does seem as though the most attention goes toward the top drivers (Schumaker, Barrichello, Montoya, Alonso, etc), and the marketing value of participation is difficult to pinpoint. I can say that I've been impressed with the huge efforts of Ferrari and BMW, and it would be fabulous to see our Porsche marque grace those raceways.

LOL , Cuz they would get their a$$ handed to them and they know it. Anyone remember when they tried to enter CART back in the day lol , that car was so bad it could not get out of its own way and what about the genius that hired the driver, Tao Fabi, OMG you gotta be joking. It was destined to fail w/ typical Porsche unrelability and the fantastic driving skill of even then a washed up F1 reject as its driver , no wonder they pulled out after 2 years. I cannot imagine what sort of F1 deal they *** up. So whos gonna drive this time Buckshot Jones or maybe Kyle Petty. It would be nice to see BMW hand them their a$$ w/JPM and Williams in front of a world wide audience.
what's the significance of "Dinan S2 M3"? isn't this just another overpriced, underperforming dinan kit any clown can buy? those guys at dinan sure know how to "modify" a car:

btw, speaking of unreliable, how bout those wonderful grenading m3 motors? hopefully porsche will never be THIS reliable:

incidentally, there are plenty of 03 and 04s grenading too. so the "fix" ain't no fix. it's a shame after all those E46 m3 owners got the "driver abuse" and "you're the only one" type bmw responses at the service dept for so long before they finally had to dream up an excuse that didn't work.

It's the money and the road car identification
Porsche has actually done a fair amount of engine design/engineering and consulting in the Formula 1 arena. I do recall that the "TAG" or "Technique D'Avant Garde" motors were Porsche Designs in fact. So, they are involved tangentially I suppose.
I think that what is overlooked is Porsche's dominance in production car based racing. They take a basic chassis and modify it to GT3 or RSR status and then they run all over the world in private hands and in factory hands. I think that this technology links to the cars we drive right from the factory floor. And of course it doesn't hurt that Porsche makes money from the racing program!
I'd rather see them back at LeMans in the prototype category than F1 personally. But until then it is good to see the trust the 911 chassis on a racing basis.

BTW isnt the X50 Kit another overpriced, underperforming porsche kit any clown can buy? See dumb a$$ now I look like as stupid as you. Notice I said "look like" I obviously need a lot of practice to come across as big retard as your self. "DOH your stupid engine keeps exploding doh, haha !! I will assume you are not a genuine Porsche owner I hope.
about as much as some crap about porsche's reliabilty (which is legendary btw) being posted on a porsche board by some boy racer with an engine grenading m3. how do you think the rest of us would do over at one of the bmw boards bashing bmws with porsche ownership (and not any bmws) in our signature? if you don't know how poorly that goes over on those boards, you ought to do a search. if you're going to visit, at least you can be respectful.

Hey I am a big fan, I have had 3 of them , I just moved onto to other cars , no biggie. I had 2 911's and a 928S4. The 928 is what killed the whole Porsche thing for me. At one time I owned all three at once so that is a fan isnt it. I had the 1987 and 1988 Carrera as well as the 88 (I think, long time ago) S4. I purchased all three brand new from Rick Hendrick Porsche in Charlette,NC on E. Indep. Blvd. I really loved my Carreras, why in Gods name I wandered into the pos 928 Ill never know. I live in S Fla and drove each car the 850 miles home from NC. Tons of fun the first two times in the 911's the third time the 928 tried to murder me.
I was cruising along at 85 mph when I noticed a S. Carolina State Trooper sitting a ways ahead so I start slowing down. Well the car just up and died, dead no power, I am frantically pushing in the clutch , twisting the key, nothing, I am now drifting at 70 mph off the road and heading dead center for the hwy patrol car. Sounds fun huh? I narrowly miss him and roll to a stop in a big muddy marsh in the median. Next thing the cop yanks me outta the car and throws me in his car saying I am under arrest for attempted assualt on a LEO. I sit in jail that night get out , grab the car from impound and it works perfectly of course now and head home , w/a big fuking court date ahead of me. I get it home that day, wash it and it wont start, push it in the garage, call Porsche, they treat me like sh*t, They fix it, on the way home from them fixing it, it stalls and dies in the middle of a busy intersection. gets towed back to them , well to make a long story short I sold it w/ 3300 miles on it. I was so pissed I sold my 2 911's and got a M6 and have been a M guy ever since. Oh I got a Video tape from Porsche sent to me cause I was such a good customer (no crap 3 cars in 3 years) well it explodes in my VCR the first time I play it. I just sat there stareing at it, typical Porsche quality.
