Watt, Just keep in mind that a regular Boxster is a 5spd and a Boxster S is a 6spd, just a heads up, I dont know much about Boxsters though.

I thought the GT2 and GT3 had a different shifter than the standard 996 models but I can be wrong as I have only taken the shifters out of the C4 and TT to replace with the B&M and havent touched the GT2 as of yet.

It may be that the GT2 shifter is the same as other 996/Boxter shifters. The shorter throws may come from shorter shift arms on the GT2 transmission.
I looked at the P E T and the GT2, 2003 Turbo, 2003 Boxter M481, and 2004 GT3 shifter seem to have the same part #. 996 424 10 03. The various year models of 996, 006TT, abd Boxters have different part numbers. I don't know what the actual difference is. The 2003 Boxter M480 has a different part #, 996 424 10 05. The pre 2003 Boxters also have a different part #.

I have " rowed " the GT3, GT2 and Boxster S ( 6 spd) OEM shifters and they all have the same , slightly heavier " throw weight " to them and a more noticeable but not notchy "metallic " synchro engagement and much less " slop " vs a reg 996, 996 Turbo and 5 spd Boxster. Reminds me of the feel of my car after after switching to the under car B&M SSK but heavier .
Gotta be something inside the tranny or different geometry of the selector levers at the tranny end of the cables on those models , as pics of the shift towers all look pretty much the same on all models , parts number differences aside.

wilbur.

it's notchy and ugly shifting, hard to find third which reminds me of my 83 SC hunting for 3rd. it's a P-O-S. and i love the stock gt2/3 shifter having 22,000 miles drivning them i dont need no stinkin short dog shifty....

how are you babe? long time no hear

If you're going back to the stock in car shifter, you might want to consider the under car B&M kit. I had it installed a few days ago and love it. It shortens the shifts forward and backward, but not left to right, so finding gears is no problem, and isn't notchy at all. Highly recommended. Check out this thread:

Watt maybe the short shifter is adjusted poorly? My SS feels fine, albeit a bit notchy, but otherwise very smooth and free of excess effort. IMO all the std 996 6 speeds are notchy with a few miles on them, short shifter or not. AFAIK the standard shifters are the same in all the 996 and 986 series cars.

I think the stock GT2 has the equivalent of the undercar shift kit.
