I am thinking of chipping my tiptronic and was wondering how much power the transmission can safely handle without modification. Any information would be welcome.

I talked to John Hennessey www.hennesseyperformance.com and he said 600hp was the max. I would be more worried about the torque though. I'm sure Sharky is pushing way more than that with his Monkeytronic though...ask him though to be sure.

I have the Tip too..was thinking about upgrading too, but ordered a 04 6 Speed TT instead...giving the G/F the TIP.

let's say the porsche Tiptronic has the Mercedes 5-speed auto trans. the SL55 has 493hp, the SL65 has 603hp. so i'd say 600 is about right... to be safe of course.

So if I am thinking of doing a stage 1 or 2 level modification(around 500 to 520HP), I should be OK without doing any modification to the tip?

Yeah..those would be mild upgrades. No worries with either of those.

There are other, more reputable tuners, that I would ask well before Hennessey. I would say any of the Vendors that are sponsors of this site would be not only more knowledgeable but also more trustworthy.

If your car is an X50 it has stronger internals than the standard turbo tiptronic tranny.

My car is a standard turbo. It seems the consensus is that it would be generally alright to have around 500HP with a standard Tip transmission.

We have tippys that are running 600 to the wheels. Not an issue and if you are in an abusive environment or daily it simply use an additional cooler in series with the original tip cooler. You will be good to go.

Mine is a x50 tip with stage 3 (ecu, exhaust, header, dv & air filter) good for around 560hp(engine), no problem so far.

stephen,

How involved is the installation of additional cooler for the tiptronic transmission. And the cost?
