997tt is not fast??

In the latest car and driver, they compared various sports cars at Virginia International Raceway and the 997tt did not do well.

lap times: zo6 2:58
gt3 3:01
r8 3:04
exige s: 3:04
base corvette:3:03
997tt: 3:05
ford gt500: 3:05
bmw 335 : 3:10
I find this very surprising that a corvette is faster on this track than the turbo and the gt500 is the same speed. Are these numbers consistent with the Ring? How do you think the 996tt would have done? (i'm afraid to ask).

i wonder if the fact that you have at least 100 rwhp more has something to do with it...had the 997TT been modded, would have been a different story.

well, consider this, the 997TT is THE fastest of those cars listed there on the ring. then the GT3 IIRC.

uhh...what configuration are they using...because those are some SLOOOOOOW times if thats the "full course"

I ran a 216 in my turbo on street tires and little talent...they must have been using the "north course"...either way...thats wierd...

a lot of people fear driving a 911 and cannot get anywhere near its full potential, which then leads to lap times that are slower than they are really capable of. i mean come on, a gt 500 that only lapped .5 seconds slower than a turbo no way. the 997TT is a superior car in every way.

while I agree that the 997tt is a superior automobile, that doesn't mean that a gt500 cannot replicate it's times with an equal driver...this was not an easy car to drive while stock. It took $2500 in suspension mods to make it hug corners as opposed to roll through corners.

well heres my reasoning...the turbo is about 3600 lbs and the gt 500 about 4000, that 400 lbs is gonna make a HUGE difference. also the turbo has wider tires for better grip and based on skid pad and lateral g's the turbo has much more grip. also the turbo slaloms at IIRC at over 70 mph, none of which the gt500 does. sure with a modded suspension the gt 500 is gonna handle better, but stock for stock there really is no comparison as far as im concerned between the two, whether you talk street straight line or on the track.

Dave, seriously, not a chance in hell a GT500 can hang with a 997 Turbo on ANY TRACK. They ran Vir Grand which is 4.2 miles long so it's a biggie, but to have the GT500 anywhere in the ballpark is obsurd. And we arent talking about coilovers and such, we are talking about bone stock cars. If this is the case your telling me that the GT500 could run within 3 seconds of the Z06 at the ring like the turbo did as well.

I could care less about which car is better but when it comes to track performance stock vs stock there is no comparison drag racing or road racing.

Not only that there is no chance in hell the Z06 beat the GT3 by almost 4 seconds. Not to mention the GT3 looked like it had huge wheels on it and the tires DO NOT look like MPSC's.

I spanked a 997TT pretty bad as well in a straight line.

Vincent gave me nice whoopin at Big Willow in his chipped 997TT though. Nothing beats skill at the track.

IMO a lot of Porsche enthusiasts do not give enough credit to the Z06. 3150lb, 500 HP, 475 TQ and big fat tires all around... you do the math. Maybe it's not sophisticated, but it's a brute.

I didn't read the article but agree with those who said the numbers make no sense. While there's certainly variation amongst production cars, unless they got the mother of all dud 997TT, it should have been faster. We can argue all day about will a Z06, GT-3, Turbo, etc. be faster but there's no way the Mustang should be there unless it was a ringer. The mags should always do a dyno test before comparo's so no one can stack the deck.
