Is RUF an automaker or a tuner?

I was thinking about it, and I am sure its an automaker because their cars have their own VIN #, but a guy I know says that they are a tuner, just like Hennessey....

RUF is classified as an automaker. But in all honesty, the best answer is they are a hybrid.

They are both. You can send your car there and get it modified by RUF using RUF parts. For example, Sean, has a RUF modified Turbo. Meaning he bought a porsche, sent it to RUF and got it RUFFED. they sell their own parts.

In addition, you can actually order a RUF version from them. Its also worthy to note that they do not use the widebody for their RUF R Turbo, instead they use the C2 body and modify the car based on engine size and needs.

Hope that helps...if not, ask more ?s

It´s classified as a manufacturer but is also available for tuning. It is NOT a tuner. When you buy a new Ruf, you can decide on virtually every aspect of the car, be it RWD or AWD, wide- or narrow-body, three different levels of power for the RTurbo, with custom engine configurations also available, rollcage or no rollcage, custom interior and exterior, you name it. Ruf is a manufacturer all right. And a high-end one at that. Just ask Adam .

RUF is a automaker since they have their own VIN numbers on their cars.

But you can get your car tuned by them, so they are commiting the action of tuning, hence I consider them a tuner as well.

Heck, even Porsche AG will modify your car for the right amount of money (we´re talking six-figure sums here), but do you consider them a tuner?

According to the german TUV (or similar), I believe they are classified as a manufacturer, along with a few other "tuners". I'm not 100% positive about this though, but it would be a hint to find a valid answer.
I personally put them as tuners. Real good and real deep, but still improving an existing design ...

Porsche AG would be a factory tuner, a la AMG, but RUF would be a factory/aftermarket tuner.
