How many of you have changed your own spark plugs

I have a 2004 996TT Cab X50. I have 9200 mile and I want to change my spark plugs to the Bosch FR6LDC. The dealer wants $800.00 to change them. I was wondering how difficult is it to change the spark plugs. How many of you have changed them yourself. What tools are required and what do you have to remove to get to the plugs.

The plugs are a pain to remove which is why it costs so much, not like a chevy V8 you have to remove the rear bumper and several other parts under there to get to the plugs. I wouldnt try it.

Depends on your mechanical skills. I did it in about 4 hours but I have a lot of experience wrenching. Its really not that hard at all IMO, just time consuming. There is a good write up on Rennlist on the procedure.

Done it several times. Can be a PITA, but it is straightforward . Rewarding when done right.

can do it without removing rear bumpers. Remove rear plastic wheel well and most of your access will be gained. Once you learn it , you will be happy you save the labor charge, and you get to inspect other things while your under there

Go for it! Figure 4 hours for the first time. Great step by step on 6Speed. "Another sparkplug thread", 8-30-06, see link from ebaker.

Thanks for all of your help and ideas. I am in the process of buying the full set of Bosch plugs and will be changing them myself.

As far as the wing goes. I just order the Techart Type 1 wing, side skirts and rear skirts. They are being painted as we speak and should be ready in a few days.

twice in the last week in the Boxster...2 hours to change 4 and another 2 hours to remove and reinstall the SuperCharger tubing nd change the other 2 plugs.

I can have the O2 sensors out and changed in 10 min now.

It's definately a challenge, but I've changed plugs on an LT-1 GM car and compared to that, it's a cakewalk. Have alot of "creative" extentions and tools handy. A pocket ratchet wrench with loads of socket types was helpful in getting the coilpacks loose and the plugs out and in. I didn't have to remove intercoolers either. about 4hrs. Don't forget the anti-seize and 30ft-lbs is what was quoted to me on the torque. I'll admit, 1 out of the six plugs escaped the torque wrench. I crushed the washer then maybe 3/8th turn.

Porsche service manual states 22 ft lbs on the plugs.

KPG I saw in rennlist that you are only to torque it down to 7lbs. Thats what Ive been doing on my car.

The Plugs are fairly easy to do them yourself at home. If you like working on your car than its worth the time to do it yourself, otherwise take it to a dealer and be done with it.
