997 Turbo
997 Turbo
Hey Everyone;
Talked to my Porsche salesman after he just had gotten back from the Factory..here's what he said was and was not coming!!
There will be NO 997 Turbo Coupe or Cab..have to wait on the 998 for that, but next year they will still make a "Select Few" 996 Turbos, but ONLY in the CAB and they will ALL come with the X50 Package and the Ceramic Brakes...and they may indeed call it an "S" model. Prices were probably going to be around 160K.
He said they were doing that (X50 and the Ceramic Brakes) on ALL of them to "Clean out their Parts Bins"...and he said since there were going to be very few made, that it would start driving the values of our TT's back UP!!
I'm not taking any of this as "Gospel", just letting everyone know what I was told from a reliable source that had just came back from the Factory!!
Hope Everyone is Having a Prosperous Week!!

well as the anticipation of the 997 release is about 4-5 months off the hyperbole, rumour and plain intrigue is here. And we are in the midst of it. We really don't know anything because Porsche has not decided to release info on the 997 in hopes of getting rid of the remainder of the 996s.
Porsche has a bigger problem than just a bunch of hype about a new turbo. They have been caught with their pants down and are urinating in the breeze.
The problem is that there are too many cars that will keep up with or beat the na 996 for under 40-50k. So the justification factor about buying a carrera when you can be smoked by some subaru is a little much for the average buyer. We all know that the 2001 TT has been overproduced and the resale market for these cars has been dismal. There has been some leveling but the writing is on the wall with the wide body 993 cars demanding more money than some of the 996s.
Porsche is in the midst of the rebirth of the Renaissance for performance street legal race production. The big bmw sedans boast 0-60 numbers of closer to 5 than 6 and there unfortunately many sport cars that are out and will be out that will keep the avg porsche TT customer plenty busy. Porsche is a package car to be true and handling remains superb. This is lost on the average consumer who doesn't know how to drive.
If Porsche turns out a 997 TT the 996TT will drop in value like a lead balloon. IMHO if this transpires, a gt2/3 will also be worth only a fraction of MRSP and probably a good time to buy would present itself (read: there are dozens of gt2's sitting on lots for months b/c nobodies ponying up big money for them now, with a new supercar on the horizon...you get the point).
On the other hand, Porsche can rally if they release a 997TT and keep ahead of ferrari on the performance end and NOT overproduce, they will maintain their competative edge. They will also likely lose a significant client base (ie people who've bought 996TT's).
If they wait and release a 998 TT they will need to do A LOT of catching up to keep them competative AND they will have to get those customers who've bought other cars in the mean time back.
In a word, Porsche is in a QUANDRY, one that originated from overproduced 996TT and a rapidly emerging genre of cars that are street legal race cars.

I heard the 997 is meant to be more like a 996 facelift rather than a brand new design. It will probably be sold for 2 years then it will be replaced by the 998 (total redesign). I bet there will be a 997 Turbo but it is nothing but minor modifications from 996. It will most likely carry the x50 package. Put it this way, I bet it will have less than 500hp in stock form.
The 998 TT should have a lot more than that otherwise Porsche is committing suicide.
