stock navigation upgrade.
i was wondering if i can ad stock navigation to my 996tt car as a direct plug in or if i would have to modify or swap plugs... also, would a 997 navi fit a 996?????
Stock navigation has problems when it comes to getting updated maps. The pioneer Avic series seems to be a good aftermarket system that a number of guys here have already installed and what I will probably change to from my stock NAV system.

I have a video ipod and got a windows program call pqdvd. I leave up to your imagination...but I can play video via th ipod with a few clicks and such. Why anyone would want to watch a video while in a porsche turbo (or any porsche) is beyond me...but FYI.
Bluetooth: phone.
USB: any thumbdrive or other mp3 player out there.
I can add a CD player later if I wish (I don't...). Pioneer's 12 disk player is $180 or so.
What is very fun: one can change the color of the illumination to match the interior or have it cyle (too cheap a look for me, but the kids love it). It is so feature deep that I haven't even touched the surface yet.
And it sounds great.
I love mine. My pcm v1.0 died. A replacement at the dealer was >$2300. My whole pioneer system installed was under 1600....fyi. I got some great deals...and my installer worked some dash magic. I really wanted to stay stock and asked if anyone could repair it...no one answered on rennlist.com.
Two weeks after I installed the system, a similar PCM 1.0 system came up on abbey for $400 dollars. :-(
I sold my CD changer on ebay. I don't use CD's any more.....so I cannot be mad at ebay.

After doing much research I found the Kenwood system seems to be a better choice than the Pioneer. Even the top end Pioneer doesn't let you navigate on the move, you have to pull over and put the vehicle in Park in order to gain access to the system. Lower end Pioneer has navigation discs that have limitations. Kenwood doesn't have either of these obstacles.
I just chose the Pioneer because of the better price point. A simple hack lets you modify the unit to use while driving. I also found the Pioneer's amber light scheme to blend well with the dash.
