Question for those who have Cup tires..
I'm thinking about the new Michelin Cup tires. TireRack says they pick up every pebble and could pit the side of the car with rocks. How many miles can I expect from a set with everyday driving?
It would be utterly pointless to get Cup tires for everyday driving. You will rarely be able to get enough heat into them to get them to their true performance potential and more than likely would not drive past the limit of non R-compound tires on the street anyway. If you are planning to do a couple of track events it probably still is not worth it. But if you are planning to really put most of the wear on the tires while you are on the track, then definitely.

Is it really that bad of an idea?

I have run Cups on my car for four months before putting on the Ruf wheels and Contis. They are not a great everyday tire and really need to be heated up to work as well as many street tires.
They also ride really crappy.

I have used Cups for approx. 14 months. I do not drive the car everyday. The difference between Cups and other regular street legal tires is like night and day on dry roads.
Why have a performance car with passanger street tires?

I think I'm getting a set of Cups. With a 5 month old baby in the house I won't be going on any long driving trips this year. The added traction should help keep my *** out of the ditch with the extra power of the GT/R kit. AutoCross will be significantly more productive. Tires only seem to last me 1 driving season anyways.
I checked into this and found that they will last a lot longer than I thought.....look at the chart, tread ware is at 7.3. That's pretty much close to a performance street tire......http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....ilot+Sport+Cup
The cup tire is a DOT legal tire for RACING (like PCA club) not for daily driving. It is very sticky when heated up and will collect everything and spit it off. The PS 2 is Michelin's newer performance daily driver type tire. The tread wear results at the Porsche Driving Experience were excellent with the PS and just as good with the PS 2. If you want to track the car, bring the cups on separate wheels, or if you live close to the track, drive them over. But after just a few events, the cup tread will no longer be "street legal," and start looking very much like a slick. I personally like the cup for the track, but if you're not in an event that requires DOT legal tires (like a DE) then slicks are the cats meow (unless of course it is raining.)

Personally, I have a track trailer, and carry my track tires to the track. And yes, from what little street driving I've done on them, Cups pick up (and throw) stones, but I've got scotchcal covering my rockers, fender lips, and trailing edges of the fenders.
Also bear in mind, that you do give up a considerable amount of wet handling, with the Cups.
