Upgraded my current SSK w/ billet shift linkage

From the day I had the Porsche OEM SSK installed about 6 months ago, I have never been happy with its operation. Extremely notchy, very flimsy in feel and not very easy shifting in second gear at high RPM.

Last week after speaking with Jay at Brandywine, I ordered the billet shift linkage and today I had it installed. I was fairly skeptical that this would solve any of my above issues. I felt if nothing else, at least I wouldn't snap the cheap plastic linkage when shifting hard. And, if it did help any of my aformentioned concerns, that would be a bonus.

Well, I had it installed today and put the car to the test this evening with some spirited runs, and its like a different shifting car all together. If I had known it would be easier to shift, cleaner from gear to gear and all around a much more confident feel it would have been done the day I installed the SSK.

Anyone else have a similar experience with both the plastic OEM linkage and then the billet?

I've had the oem ssk on my 996 and 997tt, no such issues, always used the stock linkage. You know the factory cup cars have that same stock plastic linkage. I bet, properly adjusted, very few ever actually fail. I believe the billet links also have a plastic Achille's Heel as well at the actual cantact point, plus the ghetto set screws some used to attach to the cables I never cared for myself. Glad it worked out for you though, wonder if your stockers were badly worn or misaligned from the getgo as I never had any of those issues.

My bet is the first install of the SSK was bad and when it was reinstalled with the new linkage it was done better. The set screws can be a PIA...hope it continues to work out for you.

Funny, I had the complete opposite experience. I had the billet linkage fail (the screws worked themselves free) and I went back to the original OEM part. The shifting actually got smoother although I still think it is notchy. Does further adustment have an effect on shift smoothness or is this just a by-product of the ssk?

I keep hearing about "notchy" shifting with SSK. IMO this is a symptom of poor installation. Mine has never had a notchy feel.

I had the cheap oem plastic break on my car at Mid-Ohio shortly after I bought the car. Installed the Evoms short shift kit and have never had another issue.

Has it been confirmed at all that SSK's possibly lead to 2nd gear pop out? (And yes.....I already read the sticky)

I have SSK and billet link and am "somewhat satisfied" with the feel. At times
it feels notchy.
I do like it better than the stock set-up, however.

Ya, the only thing I think it really changes is the structural integrity of the part...I only use it bc of all the tracking...

Stock SSK....love it. Perfect shifting, UMW LWFW makes quicker shifting both possible and a must (it looses revs faster too).

FWIW.
