I think my 2000 C4 has the same single-button remote as yours. It began to fail with shorter and shorter reception ranges until it finally stopped working all together. New batteries made no difference. I was able to have the dealer replace the transmitter inside the key hood for $267. He had the part in stock and it only took them about 20 minutes.

As part of this fix I also made the mod to the car's remote antenna length. Now I can consistently lock/unlock from 40~50 feet away; sometimes much further.

There's a mod to make the remote work at longer distances?
Is it a DIY type project?

Try pushing the button on the key while turning it to the start position in the ignition. Hold for 5 seconds and this will reprogram your car to your key.
