Variocam issue(s)?

Hey guys:

As some of you may know, I'm looking at a 2000 996 Cabriolet. However, after driving it the second time today, I feel like this may car may have a variocam problem.

I was reading the 996 buyer's guide by Adrian Crawford, and this particular car has the following symptoms:

- Not a completely smooth idle (it's between 650 and 800 RPM), the needle will waver back and forth by about 50 RPM
- On a warm start, it takes about a second and half after I turn the key to start. The engine will turn, then sound like it's shutting down, then come back to life and start. It seems to run strong from there on

However, contrary to what the guide states, the car does rev to over 4,500 RPM fine, and it seems to produce decent power from there.

What do you guys think? .

Thanks!

these type of hunting is usually along these stream of thought:
* vacuum line leak
* air intake leak after MAF
* MAF going bad or needs cleaning
* dirty throttle body or control
* Dirty filter etc...

in other words, the dme is hunting for proper air/fuel mixture but cannot.

Those things do not sound like variocam at all. I am kind of curious as to how technically accurate this $34.95 guide is?

Ah, gotcha. I'm going to have it PPIed before I buy anyway, but I figured I'd ask just in case.

Thanks!

Fo sho. He seemed to know what he was talking about in the guide, but in all honesty, I trust this community more and that's why I posted it .
