Remote doesn't unlock the doors - HELP!

I hope someone can help me here....

The remote on my key does not open the doors or the trunk. Central locking does work on the dash switch, but only after the car is started. After using the key in the door lock to unlock the door I have about 5 seconds to get the key in the ignition and turn it before the alarm starts honking. The unlock switch in the dash does not always unlock the passenger door, and the gas cap door is completely not working; I have to use the little pull wire inside the passenger door jamb.

I have replaced the battery in the key and replaced both fuses that have anything to do with central locking or the alarm. Still not working.

My next guess would be that the receiver isn't working? But at this point I'm lost. Anyone ever had this problem?

Electrical gremlins seem to live in my car. Last year I had to replace the alternator shortly after I replaced the battery. Then the ignition switch had to be replaced. A couple of months ago the air bag light went on. That was traced to the faulty ground/seat belt buckle deal. Now the remote.

Any words of wisdom, comfort. commiseration?

Thanks!

This happened to me before. I had to reset my remote. This may sound funny but it worked for me. Open up your remote, take the battery out, flip it upside down and reinsert it into the remote for at least 10 seconds. That should reset your remote back to default. Flip the battery back to right side up and insert it back into the remote. It should work now. Hope this helped, it worked for me.

First question is what car/year? Then...did you leave the car unused for over 5-6 days? If so your remote went to sleep...simply open with mechanical key and within 5 seconds hit the open door on the remote. If that does not work, try the above ^ procedure. If that does not do it, your remote may have failed and need to be re-programmed by the stealer.

Thanks guys. Year and model are in my signature. The car was not idle for 5-6 days. I did both procedures as described and the remote still does not work. Grrrrrrrr........ What is involved in stealer reprograming and what can I expect to hemorrhage for it?
Thanks again!

time to visit the dealer if you tried the reset method that tistrata described. cost to replace the electronics in the key and reset key is about $250-350 I think.

So, is it a new key head I need? And then have it programed for my car? Will this work?
