Please advise on 1999 996 purschase
I mentioned before that I was in the process of buying a used car. I paid a 1500 dollar deposit and bought a plane ticket for miami this weekend. Last week, after I had put a deposit down, I couldn't get the owner for three days by phone or email. He was avoiding me, so I emailed his craigslist listing from a new email address to see if he was trying to stall my sale and sell the car for more.
Sure enough, he emailed right back and said the car was still available, even though he had "an out of town looker." I know for a fact the owner is hurting for cash. I spoke to his bank, and I am buying the car for 60 dollars less than his payoff amount.
Regardless, I still have a bad feeling about his lie. Last night I sent another email from the other account to see if the car was still for sale. He said he has a deposit, but would be willing to still sell the car if the price is right.
I hate liars. I cannot stand the fact that he can lie about something like this, just to make a buck. The person in desperation to make an extra thousand dollars would be the type of person to not mention that coolant is slowly leaking and he doesn't know where it goes because it leaves no puddle.
Would you run from the sale and try to get your deposit back based on the fact that the seller is not keeping up his end of the deal? Should I abandon the idea of using the 911 to take my new baby girl around, and just keep my boxster as my extra car? Should I get a lotus elise with a warranty? AHHHH!
I am paying a premium for the car based soley on the fact that the mods that I would do to it are already done. It will in the long run save me a lot of money.
It is a modified 1999 911 with 37k miles, I am paying 31,000.

I'm thinking the same thing. The way new car sales are heading right now and the way people are starting to dump "toys," I have no doubt that I can find find other deals.
She is pretty though...

Yeah, no problem doing a ppi, but "the collection" in miami wont schedule me in for a month, so I was going to try to find an indy shop to look it over when I went down there.
The owner bought it from the service manager at champion, so I know it will have been well cared for (at some point in it's life). The previous owner did all the mods, and the current owner doesn't know much about the car.
Mods/features I know it has:
19" asanti wheels, pirelli tires, aerokit, new bumper/lip, gemballa deck lid and wing, tv & dvd player, aluminum gauges, aluminum pedals, catback exhaust, intake, re-programmed, 5% tint, litronics, custom mats, painted calipers..... soooo tempting, but such a jerk.

Max,
I know you had said Craigslist, but just as a heads up, I saw this car on eBay a few days/maybe a week or so ago. He had a buy it now up for $33K and accepted an offer of around 31000ish. Maybe that was you, but if not, be aware that you may not be the only one being jerked around. Best of luck, I was actually very close to making an offer on it myself!

MAX:
Man that seems to be a lot of headaches for the car deal. Given the distance and uncertainty - RUN LIKE HELL!

If you can't get anyone to pull a PPI and are still interested I have a friend who is a local Porsche Tech who has helped a few of us. His name is Victor, who knows, he might be willing to take a flight out to perform the PPI.
Make CERTAIN you mention me "Eli", he'll then work with you a bit more.....
Here is his contact info: http://www.pcars.us/partners/ptech.html

very nice looking 996- good luck and I hope the owner pulls his head out of his a$$.
I would probably make one more attempt and then cut my losses. You definitely want a ppi though.

Check out the regional section and ask a local to get his eyes on it. Yes a situation does tend to **** you off, but I think more often than not, people will burn a sale or a deal and go to a higher bidder. I just think most people will not admit that. With the list of mods and the well kept appearance of the car, a decent ppi should mean your set to go. Don't ever count on any seller really tell you about a MAJOR issue. If it can be hidden, it will be or it is up to you to find it through a ppi. I think the whole "trust" in this thread is a little too heavy. I would only give a bit of trust to someone on the boards that had a decent history around here and a reputation to go with it. My 02.
