How can I tell what exhaust is on my car?
I have a 99 C4 Cab. Just bought it. It was purchased from a Porsche dealer and the exhaust is not stock. It's loud, but maybe a little harsh. Not like other exhaust systems I have heard. It sounds great in the canyons when I am on the gas...but in my garage at home and at the office and at low RPM's it sounds very cheap and hollow and has a rattle to it. I am going to get another system, but I wanna know which one this is so I can get something else. I am thinking of th ePSE with the switch so I can have loud when I want or mellow when I want. y brother has a Fabspeed on his 911 and loves it. So I am thinking one of those 2. There is a engine protector plate on the car from Tech-Efx. I looked them up and they also "gut" the stock exhaust. I am thinking it's probably that, but I just wanna be sure...Any ideas?
You can tell if it's gutted. If you stick you head up in there (with the wheel off), you can see the welding (6x4 inch rectange) where they opened and resealed it. I had it done and didn't really care for it.
I've heard the PSE. It's nice. Great sound, not too loud.
I've got the cargraphic export exhaust. It's awesome. Sounds like the PSE with the volume of a fabspeed. I was looking for something slightly lounder than the pse. Very subjective though and everybody is looking for something different. You won't go wrong with any of those three. The cargraphic is priced between the pse and fabspeed.

Yup...I saw your post but I don't buy that. If it was THAT bad, they wouldn't sell them for fear of lawsuits. Since they know it's an issue but have not said not to do it they are legally liable for damages. Maybe a Cab with the PSS9 on a track would cause some issues. For that matter the ROW M030 with stiffer shocks and springs would have similar problems and Porsche would say it's not suggested, like they did on 97 Boxsters and 18" wheels. So, since I probably won't track my car, but want the best ride I am going with the PSS9's...Also what settings had those effects? Was it the stiffest settings? JIC's which are stiffer were actually suggested by another Porsche Tuner so...to each his own.
ever considered that maybe it isnt an aftermarket exhaust ?
the way you desrcribed it makes me think of my car, which .. doesnt have a system on .. but is without catalytic converters
the sound is just unbelievable over 3000rpm

It's not the shock/strut settings that cause the problem. It's the spring rate.
The adjustments on the shocks let you fine tune it, but ultimately it's the spring that determines ride quality. At least that's what he told me. He told me that even on soft, it's going to be stiffer than stock, but it will still ride very smooth.
The PSS spring rate is three times stock, and that's the problem with the cabs. He didn't say all suspension systems cause this on the cabs. He said it was specifically their spring rate on the PSS system that causes the chassis flex and possible damage to the cab's chassis. He told me that their spring rate was mucher higher than most aftermarket companies and factory upgrades.
And as far as not selling it for fear of problems, he wouldn't sell it to me. I'm not trying to tell you what to do. Just relaying what he told me. He ought to be credible as he's US Bilstein East's tech rep. I'd call him if I were you. And if you bought them from Gert, I'd call him and ask about those changes they make upon import. Not trying to bust ***** here, just passing the info I got along and trying to look out for you. Hate to see you have a problem down the road.

I first heard the PSE in the dealer showroom. I had test driven several cars without the PSE and had not yet heard "the sound".
The dealer sat me in a brand new C4S with the PSE exhaust switched off. The dealer said "start and rev her up". So I obligingly rap it to about 4000. "Now, he says, flip that switch on the dash and rev it up again".
What happened next can only be described as a moment of pure joy. I hit 4000 again and the sound of that car filed the whole dealership. I let out an whoop that was equaly as loud. I was sooo pumped I could not stop smiling. People came out of their offices to witness the spectacle. This is what a sports car should sound like WOW!
I bought the car.
You will love it!

Msindi:
Here you go. Here's the number in case anyone else needs it.
EAST: 1-704-663-7563
I believe his name was Scott. Nice guy.
His comments about chassis problems were directed towards the cabs only. He can better answer the questions about what parts they change with the setup after they import it. Not sure if it applies to just 996 c2 or all including turbos.

DD95...been doing some research. Apparently the earlier Targa's and cabriolets including the 993's had problems with chassis flex. The 996 Cab addressed this issue and is far stiffer. A few tuner sites state the advantages of the Coilover system on a Cabriolet...do a google search for "996 cabriolet chassis flex"...some interesting info...I am still going with my PSS9 install.
I'll check out that info.
The bilstein rep was referring to my specific year and model though in regards to the problems with the PSS9 springs.
Good luck with it. It is a nice coilover system.

it rocks. i love it. i've pretty much heard everything but the ghl. i'm really happy with it and even the wife approves
sounds like a pse but louder. good fit. no drone or resonance. i did a full review on it here if you do a search. i posted it about two weeks ago. cargraphic makes great stuff. plus it's a couple hundred bucks less than the pse.
