Just installed K&N intake.............
How do you know your MAF is out? Second question: Let's say my MAF goes. I have an extended Warr. on my ride. Would the K&N Void that? I guess I could always put back the OEM and take it in. Thanks
1. i believe that the new model maf is from 2002---on
2. you may notice NOTHING when your maf starts to go... fuel efficiency goes out the window...then maybe hard start up in cold weather.... rough idle... your check engine light comes on...crappy acceleration... or if you are lucky enough to have let it go for awhile... you car will stop running!!
3. K&N should not void any warranty unless specifically noted on your warranty (fat chance of that) you should do a search for that one... there is tons of info on intakes and warranties

Generally speaking, aftermarket parts will only void a warranty when the failure is DIRECTLY related to the aftermarket part. With an extended warranty, if the repair shop doesn't tell the adjuster that the CAI caused the MAF failure, it will probably never become an issue.
Thanks
Indeed I'll keep the OEM around if something blows. Thanks for the 411 on the K&N intake. I'm ordering mine right now!
Condoms not 100%
If condoms were 100% I wouldn't be posting or driving a Pcar! Not sure if my parents were happy about it though. I've found the K&N for $250.00 out the door. Is that a pretty decent price? Thanks
I just installed my K&N this weekend. I've got say that it was one of the most frustrating installs I've done. I have used K&N's on a number of my other vehicles and this kit and instructions were the WORST. I put on the plenum and TB at the same time. The K&N made wedging the plenum between the intake hoses feel easy in comparison. The heat shield gasket is a piece of engineered ****. Just be aware that you are buying an unassembled kit that includes 2 pages of detailed instructions such as, "Install the bracket with included hardware."
In hindsight, I'd give serious consideration to the Evoms option even with the higher price. That said, it does sound pretty cool...

Question # 10000 on the intakes.
Do each of these retain the screen in the OE intake tube? To explain, MAF's need an air straightening grid in front of them to allow for proper measurement of the air passing over them. My previous car was a E46 BMW M3. I installed a K&N intake and it ran rough for quite awhile before a do-it-yourself'r (and engineer) figured out the screen bit. Once I placed the grid in place on the K&N, everything ran wonderfully well.
Curious on the 996 situation. Sounds like it could be the very same condition if the grids are not transferred.

I did not have to open the factory air box, so never noticed if there was any kind of screen in front of the MAF. There isn't one inside the K&N tube.
I've put about 50 miles on since changing all three parts and everything seems fine. Actually, better than fine -- it's GREAT. She screems like a banshee, pulls harder (esp from about 4500 rpm) and the throttle response is much improved.

LOL- yeah the KN air-box is the "erector set from hell", and you'll have to make corner relief cuts on the rubber gasket to get it to fit the tight bends of the box. Other than that it's an easy install. Would be a huge improvement if KN moved to a molded or pre-stamped box instead of shipping it in small pieces.
For the price and benefit though it's a minor inconvenience comparatively, and once it's assembled it's very solid.

Also installed it on my previous car M3 E46 without troubles. Still didn't install it on my 996, waiting for better weather... hopefully it will be so easy like in the M3!
$250 is the cheapest I can find it for as well.
On previous intake installs the trickiest part for me has always been getting the hoses to let go once you remove the clamps. Sometimes they are stuck on there pretty darn good.
Additionally, as someone else said, K&N has extensive info on their website backing their claim that their intakes do not foul Mafs. See here: http://www.knfilters.com/MAF/massair.htm and here http://www.knfilters.com/MAF/massairfindings.htm

PS: I had gone about 4k miles on this intake without a problem.....
