IPD Plenum Day Dyno Results (with Pictures)
Car: 2002 3.6L Stock 996
Temperature: 80s in Southern California
Location: Fullerton, CA
I was the lucky one to represent 996 for the IPD Plenum install and dyno here in Orange County. I wish to thank Greg from IPD for putting this event together. The whole event is not only organized, professional from start till end, Greg went above and beyond and provided everyone free drinks (newcastle beer!), free food, and great time. I also wish to thank GT Pro - they executed the dyno with utmost precision and professionalism when handling my vehicle.
So here goes the story...
Car went on the dyno, did 3 base pulls. I don't have the complete dyno graph yet, but my car surprised everyone with 296 max HP on the initial pull. Two later pulls the car leveled to about 290 and 291 max HP. It was explained to me that 290 is high for a stock 996. most good condition stock 996 average about 280. The power band was very smooth and all three pulls you can tell the curve is consistent, motor is excellent condition.
IPD Plenum was installed and more pulls were done. Initial pull indicated peak to be 300HP. It was explained to me that the ECU will take a bit to adjust to the extra airflow. The verdict at this point is that the plenum gains about 10-15HP throughout the powerband, with 15HP and 15lbs of torque being the biggest gainer in the mid range (right about 6k RPM).
ECU was reset and car was allowed to be cool for a bit and one more pull was done. This time the HP peaked at 305. in the mid range the biggest gain was about 22-24HP and 20lbs of torque.
The most important thing to me was not the peak HP or peak gain. but the consistency the curve of the dyno. The shape of the curve is SMOOTH and it literally shifted in Y axis. This is the best gain one can ever hope for. one can tell from 3K rpm forward, it is consistent throughout the entire powerband all the way to 7kRPM. Remember, that's 10-20HP to the wheel for every RPM within 5K RPM rev range. It is power you can use on the street.
I drove the car for another 50+ miles after the dyno session. Yes you can feel that the car is more responsive - the throttle just seems more sensitive. Yes the car has a slight more power. and I don't know this makes sense or not, it seems the engine is a bit quieter when cruising and my oil temperature dropped slightly. I guess the best way i can describe is that the car is smoother. it felt like I had an a/c compressor running previously and all of sudden i turned it off and the engine no longer has that load.
you have to see the device in person to appreciate the simplicity of it. it is a really simple device. I think it is a great sleeper mod for those who wish to gain just a bit more hp without the extra noise of intake and exhaust.

So, did the dyno operator inform everyone that you automatically pick up some added power when you reset the computer.....AND NO OTHER CHANGES HAVE BEEN MADE or did they leave that little bit of info out and just reset the computer AFTER the new plenum was installed?
Shut up already, we get it, you do not beleive in the plenum

that's probably why they did some base runs first.

No. Actually, the OP clearly stated that in order to get more than 4 peak hp more they had to reset the computer.
Well, the OP also says that the car is more responsive and he can tell the difference, therefore it is a successful mod for him and that is all that matter, your opinion is pretty much useless, once again, shut the hell up

If you had read my previous posts on the plenum effects you would know that I do not question the change in the power curve which IS there. However, the plenum has an immeasurable effect on peak power. Similar power curve changes can be accomplished for free.
