is 89 octane with octane booster a viable option?
You are driving an expensive/impractical sports car that gets so-so mileage and usually calls for a heavy foot. It costs more to fuel, repair, and drive. If you are really worried about 5 dollars per fill-up (which equated to 150 dollars a year for most drivers,) I recommend another daily driver.
Yep, what you say is true. The risk is not worth the reward...

The rediculous 8-10 ounces of "octane booster" will barely raise your octane rating by .1...that means .1 NOT 1 point. I've been running Toluene in my 930 for almost a year and usually run a gallon to ten gallons of California's famous 91 octane that they erroneously refer to as "supreme".
I buy my Toluene from Sherwin Williams paint stores for around $36 for five gallons (probably a lot more now) and even at adding a gallon to ten gallons, Im realistically only raising my octane rating about 1 or 1.3 points. Straight Tolulene is rated at about 110 octane. The bottom line is those dogone octane boosters at AutoZone or Kragan's run around $8 or more for a 8-10 ounce bottle...and do virtually NOTHING but ding your VISA card. Just go in and do the math....even if the ten ounces was 150 octane....what would ten ounces really do to raise the octane level of a tank filled with 16 gallons of 91 octane? Rediculous.....
And furthermore....even with gas the cost it is....do you really want to potentially compromise a $15K or more engine to save $5 a tank? Stay off the accelerator a bit and you'll run your usual consumption rate from around 14 mpg (spirited drivng in an 02 TT) to around 18 mpg or even better if you're driving freeways.

WROSS: Damn....did I do it again? I just got back from a one week seminar on interpersonal relations and non-verbal communication. I guess I'd better schedule another session or two.
But really....you're that statistician...you do the math and tell me....

You own a Porsche. I would not even risk it.
