1999 Carrera 2 No Exhaust.

Hey guys,

I am about to polish my exhaust and was wondering about few things but mainly:

1) Once my exhaust is removed, I want to hear how is sounds and drive around with NO exhaust. Is this bad in anyway? I know on a Cobra it will lift the heads if you WOT. Is it safe to drive around in my 996 w/ or w/ out WOT'n?

2) Is there a write up on how to remove the exhaust? just looking to expedite the process..

It won't necessarily hurt anything driving without the mufflers, BUT you will melt the bumper if you drive agressively so other than a jaunt around the block I suggest not driving without the exhaust on the car. You could do the "pepboys" muffler bypass mod which is fairly easy and drive the car as hard as you want as it will route the exhaust out the back of the car instead of into the bumper.

As for taking off the mufflers. Couldn't be easier. (3) 13mm nuts to remove on the muffler hanger and then take loose the 17mm nuts on the clamp and the whole muffler assembly comes right out. it's easier to do with the rear wheels off of the car though it's not necessary. You should be able to find diagrams of what I'm talking about on Renntech.org

Yeah I'd just run up to the car parts store and pick up (2) 90 degree bends. Just make sure they have a 2 1/4in slip fit and just clamp them on. It will look tacky and I wouldn't recommend degrading your Porsche for long. But it will give you an idea of what the bypass sounds like. Or just pick up a set of bypass pipes and sell them when you're done. You can get your money back out of them.

you'll get tired of the bypass pipes eventually, it is just too loud inside the car for every day use. You'll also lose torque with bypass pipes from what I've read.

If you want LOUD head-turning sound at WOT, a liveable daily ride inside the car and actually improve performance, buy these sport "mufflers" now while they are on sale: http://www.afterhoursautomotive.com/...emufflers.html (videos etc).
$200 off website price until July 4

I got a set and they rock. I'm now selling my 996 but guess which part I am keeping for my next pcar??

Which fabspeed exhaust components do you have installed? sport cats, headers, mufflers?
These new mufflers mount like regular mufflers to the end of the cat pipes, and use your factory tips. So they would fit just as your stock mufflers fit.
There are pictures of the mufflers, and videos of them installed on a 996 on the website.

How do you like that exhaust it seems like it's like a super bypass pipe. I know you have had muffler bypass pipes before How would you compare the sound and do they get rid of the tourge loss at bottom end??
