Corrected Question 996 C2 Vs 996 "C4S" mufflers

Does anybody know if the mounting points on the 996 C2 and a 996 C4s mufflers are the same? I am trying to figuire out whether I can mount a set of C4 sport pipes on a C2 with a factory Turbo rear bumper.

To my knowledge they are exactly the same.

Only difference is the short end pipe that the tips mount on.

My AP mufflers came straigh off a C2 and I mounted them up no problem.

all NA are the same mount, it is the tips that are different.
the 997 mufflers even mount the same as 996, but the exit pipe is a different shape.

If you get a set of C4S pipes (or possibly C2S pipes) that should resolve the fitment issue.

Thanks for the replies. To make sure I understand. If I was to install a set of sport mufflers for a C4 the only difference would be the position of the exit pipes where you attach the tips? I could then attach my tips and the position would the C4 bumper exhaust cutouts.

erubin- the muffler mount and muffler exit pipe on NA narrow and widebody cars are the same. The tips which attach to the muffler exit pipe are different for narrow and widebody cars. The tip exit points on the bumper are in different spots between narrow and widebody cars.
so, if you have a widebody bumper or widebody car, you need to get a set of widebody tips.
If you have a narrow body car and a narrow body bumper, you need narrow body tips.
If you put a widebody bumper on a narrow body car, I would venture to say you would need widebody tips to match up with your new bumper's widebody tip locations.

The 3.4 exhaust mounting plate is different from the 3.6 mounting plate. It does not matter if it is a c2 or a c4 they are the same exhaust. The exhaust tip location are the same though. It is the mounting bracket that changes the location of the tips, hence a different mounting bracket for the 3.4 vs the 3.6.

Thanks for the clarification. I was not aware that the exit position was determined by the tips. I thought all the tips were the same and the muffler pipes where different. I have heard that others who have done this mod added c4 extension pipes or had the cans modified to move the tips outward but I have not been able to locate the extension tubes.

Thanks again for all the great information.

Ok, so I am not to bright. My real question should have been C2 vs C4S? As I now understand the location of the outlets on the C4s are inboard not outboard of the C2 and C4. Since my bumper is a Turbo it has the same outlet location as the C4S. So the real question was the ability to use a c4S sport exhaust along with my C2 tips to position the pipes correctly.

Good info- to clarify, the 996 mufflers bolt up to the engine bracket with the same two long bolts on 3.4 and 3.6, but the positioning of the 3.4 engine bracket is different correct?

Im a bit ****... but maybe we're talking about the same thing.

not the bracket that is mounted on the engine (they are the same on the 3.4 and 3.6). The mounting plate that is on the muffler that is held on with the long and short bolts. The mounting plates have 3 screw studs that mounts on the engine bracket. The 3 screw studs are positioned differently on the 3.4/3.6 mounting plate.

Thumbs up

Redridge,

Good info to know, but I think in the case of the orig post, he is asking about 3.6 narrow body vs wide body. Looks like he has a 03 C2 with a turbo bumper.

In that case, the only difference is in the shape/length of the short end pipes that the tips clamp onto. Brackets and mufflers are the same. I would think you would need a set of C4S (widebody) end pipes.

Thanks Brando,

This was exactly my question. I spoke with a couple of aftermarket exhaust guys today to try and get a clear answer. What I have found out is I can order 996 C4s wide body mufflers and they will position the tips correctly for my turbo bumper when installed on my C2 NB.
