Universal Turbo Kit? Just Curious

I was watching that show trucks the other day and the guy put a universal turbo kit on a truck. Has anyone thought about doing that to a 996? I was just reading that supercharger thread and it's just way to expensive to do on my 99, anyone hear of these kits or know anything about them?

i don't know about universal turbo kits. but, marc at turbowerx should be coming out with a turbo kit for normally aspirated 996s later this summer. i have no idea what the pricing will be.

A universal anything kit is best suited for a truck, not a Porsche. I wouldn't touch it.

I don't know if there is such a thing as a universal turbo kit. Turbo head flange exhaust manifold, fuel injectors, engine management settings, fuel pump, turbo size, etc....cannot be universal.

The closest thing on the market is STS universal turbo kit. Of course it wont work for 100% of the cars on the road. It provides the basics to start a turbo system. www.ststurbo.com

The trick is supportability. You can make a custom kit easily, but you need to find someone who knows how to tune on a Porsche. Other problem is the N/A motor uses fairly high compression so you would have to go with low boost. I'm assembling a supercharger for a fraction of the cost that other tuners are charging but it's a little into no mans land. You buy a kit from a tuner you get a plug and play, proven kit, with support. I'm just looking to go with 4-5psi, just a little more juice without the worry of upgrading a lot.

Agreed- I've pieced together dozens of turbo kits but the 2 main thinks you must learn are that tuning is very important and so is knowing what type of boost a car can handle.

Yeah it's a little unchartered water with the 996s, plus it's a pretty expensive engine to experiement with (one reason why there aren't many options). Other issue is the 911 is stubborn with room. So you really have to work into the custom piece. Trucks have big engine bays that you can use a lot of universal parts. The N/A would require some sophisticated working to get air to air intercoolers. However the water to air cooler found on the Vortech kit is a nice option. It can be done, but the results seem to lean to the expensive side. Plus quality turbo parts are expensive. My solution is fairly inexpensive but it's not going to make a ton of power, and it's just an idea, no testing yet.

It's not possible to add any significant amount of boost w/out an ecu reprogram/piggyback.

^^ Jon (Swift996), I'm interested in learning more about your SC plug and play when you have more data......I'm absolutely surprised someone has not been able to come up with some sort of a SC or Turbo kit that could deliver 50-80HP gains for a fraction of the cost of the big name brands.......not down playing the big name brands (they are the best of breed), but I don't see myself spending another 1/4 to 1/5 the value of the depreciable asset on kit.......................so no one likes Turbo kits here I guess???

K....I see what a uni turbo kit is now. It is just a turbo with universal downpipe U- bends with hose clamps and if you go further, can have a wastegate and oil pump etc....guys, there's a lot more to this than for what its' worth.

The main unit missing would have to be an engine management. That is where the cost is, usually $1200 to $5,000 depending on what engine management you opt for. Of course, piggy back systems are much more cost efficient but adjustability becomes very limited.

There is too much to consider (size of turbo, fuel injectors, size of downpipe, size of intercooler piping, proper engine management, boost) when it comes to setting up a turbo system to go with displacement, compression, etc....
