Possibly the dumbest question you'll ever see here.

Hi everyone,
I am going to test drive a 996 Carrera tomorrow to see what all the hype is about. I sat in one at the dealership the other day and rowed through the gears without ever turning it on.
Unfortunately I don't have any friends/colleagues who own Porsches or know anything about them so I'll have to embarrass myself here and ask you guys: how do you put these cars into reverse? I didn't feel a reverse gear and don't want to ask at the dealership because that might give them the idea that they can jerk me around.

Thanks everyone!
and feel free to laugh at my expense

Haha... yea... I'd laugh if I were you too. But, unfortunately, I'm serious. I see the numbers on the shift ****, but couldn't seem to find reverse. Can someone describe to me how to get into reverse? Or should it be painfully obvious once I turn on the ignition? Thanks guys!

I usually put it in neutral, open the door, push off with my left foot. Once you get used to it, its not that hard.

You have to go to the left and when you feel the tension keep pushing left and it will go over a lil more....then you go forward... like in front of first...you'll know

Thanks! So theres nothing like having to pull up or push down on the ****, like on some other cars? And can you definitely feel the difference between putting it into 1st and reverse like most other cars?

Hell... if all else fails, I'm taking porshaw's advice!

porsche4391 is pulling your leg. The correct way to go in reverse is as I described.

you are such a good sport it is hard to pile on you...no push down or pull up...from neutral just straight over to the left and then forward...you should be fine...you aren't a member of congress are you?

LOL, that's funny. I wish I could have helped but I haven't sat in a 911 since I was about 12 years old and I was too busy getting flung all over the place by my uncle trying to get it sideways, to look how he got into reverse.

A tough question to ask for sure

always do what the stick tell you no matter what you're riding.
Look at the tip and follow the lead.

Haha, yea, I figure I dish it out enough I should know how to take it. Plus, a laugh, is a laugh, is a laugh, which is good; even if it comes at my own expense!

EDIT: This is DSTrading
