poster's on the various automobile sites use the word "tranny". I know they are referring to transmission(or so I believe) and yet no such word exist in the dictionary.

Is this a colloquial abbreviation? Is this a case where someone used it and was picked up by others to a point it is a accepted word?

Slow day there Nick? It falls into the same category as "ride" and "wheels"/. Just a jargon IMHO

Nick, I guess its like how some people refer to wheels on a car as "SHOES" and sneakers as "WHEELS" , kind of funny.

Tranny

On a 911/993/996 Porsche
the Diff is in the Tranny
the Dog Teeth are Syncros
the Spiders are Gears
the Case is the Block
the Upright is the Strut and is the Shock
the Nose is the Trunk
the Convertible is a Cab
the Heater box holds the Exhaust (earlier cars)
the Rim is the Wheel
the Shoes can be the brake pads
the Shoes could be the Wheels
the Wheel is the Rim
the Wheel is the Steering Wheel
the Rack is the Steering
the Wing is the Spoiler
the Skirt is the Rocker
the Flair is on the Fender

Anyone have anymore

"batwing" is the piece below the oddment compartments.
"horseshoe" is the center AC surround.

and in SF, "tranny" could be the driver.
