Off Topic - Anyone good with law/legal matters?

My P-car is registered and titled in the commonwealth of VA. They do require a front tag and of course I don't use one (haven't had an issue). The other night I parked my car in the District of Columbia on the street. I received a parking ticket (meter expired, although an error because it was after 6:30pm) but I also received a ticket for no front tag.

Can DC enforce VA law? I wouldn't think they would have the authority to issue me a ticket.

Any help would be much appreciated, I want to beat this charge!

hey that sucks- I get those stupid front plate tickets all the time out here in LA. Cost of running with no front plate.... oh well.

DC/VA seems to be somewhat integrated, I wouldn't be surprised if there is some crossover.. but let us know what happens.

btw, I was in DC the other week. Saw the Gipsy Kings at Wolf Trap in your neck of the woods. Very cool outdoor concert hall.

Same stupid law here in Ohio. I've managed to get away with no front plate on my Cayenne S and my 996 C4.
I do make an annual contribution to the local chapter of the P.B.A. and I have the little police badge sticker in my front windshield next to the VIN. I'm hopeful that the officer gives me a break if I ever get pulled over for a missing front plate.
Too bad politicians have nothing better to do than complicate our lives.

it's only the meter maids that give out those tickets here... which they seem to LOVE doing. I don't want to drill holes in my 997 or CTT bumpers!!

Need to revisit that "auto hide-a-plate" idea..

Almost got a contempt of court last year in a Dallas court. Judge told me to get a plate on the car and submit proof. I told him that I just did not see myself drilling a pair of holes in my bumper to get out of a $45 ticket. I p-shopped a picture of it sticky taped and took it to the court clerk for a dismissal.

I received the same ticket in LA. I wrote the court a letter and told them the front bumper had been replaced and painted but the shop did not have the plate bracket in stock. It is on order. The ticket ended up being a fix it ticket. I then taped the plate and bracket to the bumper, brough it the police department had them look at it and sign the ticket that it was fixed and then sent it back to the court. Then home and by by front plate.

You have two issues here:

A) DC is a separate Federal District. Fed law has supremacy so they "may" be able to ticket you if the law of DC requires a front plate. You were not ticketed under VA law but under DC's motor vehicle code.

B) That ticket will most likely show up on your record in VA. So to whom do you argue?

So you do have a problem.

What's the ticket cost? $30-$50? May be cheapest to pay it and then spend $35.00 to purchase my Porsche front plate holder to keep in trunk for the next time you go there!

Regardless of if they can, they did. Now the ball is in your court. Wait too long and they will probably issue a summons/warrant for you

It might cost you more in time, effort and headache to beat this one. If it's $50, just pay the fine.

When one enters a jurisdiction that one subjects himself to the laws and regulations of that jurisdiction.

Therefore they can issue citations.

So as I stated you are best off to pay that fine before it does go to warrant!

so, if I take my florida car (no front tag required or issued) and go there... what should I do? make a color photocopy of my rear plate and slap it up front with tape?

I think Joels ? was that he doesnt even get a front plate in FL. It is the same in MA. I have a grandfathered plate here I transferred. There were no front plates issued at the time my orig. plate was issued. Hence my pcar has no front plate.

If by your local jurisdiction you are not issued a front plate then the alternative jurisdiction cannot impose their regulations. That's a very simple argument that can be done by "declaration" to the court.

However, if your DMV issues two plates then you know the results.

It's a bummer but what can you do.

A friend of mine, with MD tags, gets ticketed all the time for not having the front plate on his car in DC even when he places the tag in the windshield. I'd like to know your outcome if you fight it.
