New to me 996

Hi guys,

just introducing myself, I'm sure will be some familiar faces here, from other message boards.

I just picked up an 03 C2 Cab last weekend, 6 speed with 48k miles. ended up getting an extended warranty for peace of mind. I think I got a decent deal.

This is my first porsche, I've been a BMW guy for quite awhile. had an E36 M3 with a dinan supercharger, an 05 E46 M3, with stoptechs, an 06 M roadster with KW v3, and still have an 08 335i... (and an E34 525i . I also come from a history of S2000s, I've owned 4, an 00, an 02, an 04 and an 06. I guess I go through cars pretty quickly. Almost got an 08, but ended up with the P-car for less, so I'm happy. I instruct for Unlimited laps, and have been since the beginning, so if you've ever been to their events, you've probably seen me.

Congrats and I'm sure you can tell why your previous cars just don't drive like your 911. Or sound as special.

Yeah. It does drive very differently. I'm sure that my 335i is faster (355rwhp) and I'm sure that my old s2000 with motons handled better, but in a lot of ways, this is the most satisfying to drive car that I've owned. there IS definitely something special about it. The sound, the feel and communication from the steering, the balance, the shape of the horsepower curve...

Just curious, my car is a louder than I expect it to be, but it appears to have a stock or stockish exhaust. (don't get me wrong, I love the sound!) I know the modded stock exhausts have a pipe welded in that is pretty obvious from the underside... Are there aftermarket exhausts that look stock? Or, is the factory exhaust just this vocal?

Nice ride. Pick up a short shifter asap. I cannot tell you how much of difference it is. EVO installed mine on the drive home from LA. (www.evoms.com) My first mod/change and well worth every penny. Don't forget the aluminum linkage as well!

I ordered the 997 shifter already. I can't stand most short shifters, I hate notchyness and would rather have a long throw. Hopefully the 997 shifter is a good compromise.

Question on the linkage, do both break or only one? Or is the issue that the stock linkage has play in it?

The stock plastic/nylon linkages break. I believe just one. Call EVO to verify.

Congrat's on the new ride... Normally you can tell visually if it's an aftermarket exhaust because they are typically stainless steel therefore they have a "shiny" look vs. the stock exhaust which has a dull look. I think most aftermarket exhaust are stamped by the manufacturer as well.

Sound is subjective but most guys on here upgrade the stock exhaust for more sound...

Congrats and welcome! Very clean looking cab- Looks like it's been well taken care of.

BTW, KWv3's perform spectacularly on the 996! There's a deal on them in the Vendor or Group Buy forum section. Had them on my 02 996 and it completely transformed the car.
I too came over from Bimmer land... on my 2nd pcar now. Really took some time to get the feel of it though coming from front-engine cars.

On my S2000 and M Roadster, I found the KW V3s not to ride real well. they were ok, but definitely a compromise from stock... on my S2000, the PSS9s were not a compromise at all, if anything they rode better. On my 335i, the PSS9s are good, not as stockish as the s2000, but not objectionable at all.

Are the KW v3 better on the 996? Honestly, I don't see myself tracking my cab much at all, so I want to stay away from a suspension that makes compromises for track performance... my KWs did that
