Error Code p1531 - camshaft position sensor

Hello again,
I've had a CEL for a while now, but I've been busy at work. Finally scanned it to find out what was wrong and error code P1531 came up - which apparently has something to do with the "camshaft position sensor"..... I'm assuming that means it's shot, right? So I need a new one?..... I dunno. I've never had any experience with this particular sensor.

Regardless, if I AM correct in my deductions (which would be nice for a change) and I AM going to have to change this little sensor........ where the hell can I find it? (I mean in regards to its location within the engine bay)

I've done some basic deductions (using the words "camshaft" and "position sensor") to narrow down the possible locations of said sensor, but I always like asking you guys before I do anything to my car. So if someone has encountered this before, and has ANY advice on how to proceed, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
John

I have the same problem. I used Durametric software and at idle I can activate each bank cam solinoids. The idle gets rough on both banks. I think its the sensor and not the solinoid. But where is it and how do we change it? Also does anyone have the part# for it?
Thanks

Here is some info for the P1531 according to the ODB II manual.

P1531 has three likely causes:
- Open circuit in triggering wire.
- Open circuit in B+ supply.
- Actuator faulty.

Check the wiring and clean it, if it is okay then replace the actuator.

This is for MY99...I'm not sure about yours..I am assuming the same area if not real close by..

Connector actuator bank 1 ( driver side ) is located on the engine block near cyl. # 3 in the trans area.
Connector actuator bank 2 ( pass. side ) is located on the engine block near cyl. # 4 rear side of the car - exhaust area.

My AOS has been leaking for a few weeks now. The cam sensor is right below the AOS along the path where the oil and coolant from the AOS is leaking. I wonder if the hot oil/coolant has anything to do with it.
