996 upgrade to 997 shifter-shift **** choices?
I'm planning to swap out my 996 stock shifter with the shorter 997 oem shifter (i like that it'll be a drop-in install, so I dont have to deal with the PITA b&m install).
for those who have done the same mod on their 996, did you just use a stock 997 ****? or what other options have you used? please post pics if you have them!

I would think that the 997 shift **** would fit if I installed the 997 shift mechanism. not sure, but yeah i'll make some calls to the usual places and keep you guys posted

my understanding is that the only issue with fitting a 997 **** into a 996 (with or without 997 mechanism) is with the leather gaitor being incompatible. it is simply not the correct shape to fit with the centre consol gear stick opening.
i have thought about the possibilities of re-using the 996 gaitor or removing the surround reinforcement and attaching it to the 996 horseshoe but am loathe to just but a 997 gearknob to hack up.

Guys, Carnewal offers pre-adapted 997 shifters with 996 mounts in a variety of shifter styles. No affiliation, just a happy customer. Shipping was super quick as well.
When I get tired of my 996 CF shifter, I'm getting the 997GT3 in Alcantara.

The actual shifting mechanism is the same more or less... so you can use your old 996 ****... or any other **** that would fit a 996. Carnewal has some awesome conversions if you prefer the more current 997 shift **** style (to me it looks like the shifter on my 2002 GTI, weak sauce). Techart also makes a cool aluminum ball type ****, if that's your thing.
When I upgraded to the B&M (perfect reduction, IMO) I bought the OEM 996 GT3 **** in alcantara from Suncoast.

beautiful, i was leaning towards the carbon/alu 997 style retrofitted for 996. but the gt3 996 **** looks great too (esp with the stitching and painted ctr console)
+1.

thanks, do you have any pics of the 997 x97 ****- is it one of the 997 retrofits that carnewal offers?

I figured as long as the center console was out for the shifter swap, I might as well replace the console, and then a few extra parts... well, you know how that goes...
Also, I heard UUC ***** would work on a 996... uucmotorwerks.com
