Laser Interceptor Install

I guess these only became available last year and are still kind of rare. I think I'm going to get one but would hate to reinvent the wheel regarding installation. If you have one, give me a shout. Thanks!

I have the older Escort ZR-3 laser shifters in my Audi........and they are turned off (receive only, no shifting).

First thing you need to do is check your state (and states you drive in frequently) for legality. Most states now have specific laws that make them illegal or subject to a vague law regarding "interference with an officer's duties". All of the newer laser guns used by police have "jamming" detection that detect most, if not all, of the off-the-shelf laser shifting systems.

Believe it or not, a laser parking assist system is considered the best laser jammer out there. Google Laser Park Pro for the details. Its not cheap and is very popular in the UK for both parking and jamming. Works equally well on both sides of the pond and MIGHT be immune to giving the police officer 'jamming' errors. At the very least you could explain the equipment away as a 'park assist system'.

Thanks Jack. I am familiar with the different options for jammers and with the laws of my state and decided to get the LI. If I can't find someone who has done an LI install in a Porsche I will fall back to any other system installed such as the LPP you mention for guidance.

Here is the legal ease on this and is verified.

Nationally radar jammers are illegal and a violation of the of the FCC. It has no bearing on any state laws. A state or local municipality can add to but not take away from anything on a federal level.

With that said, you have to be clear about the word radar vs. laser. Radar wavelengths are controlled and regulated by the FCC. Laser band frequencies are regulated and controlled by the FDA.

IRL Case Study:
So one day I was in the middle of nowhere Texas doing well over twice the posted speed. I know I will get flamed for it but there was no one around for miles but 5/0 heading in the opposite direction. I knew he knew something but felt he had a radar/laser read issue. He pulled a u-turn and pounced on me in seconds. I am running a V1 with K40 Front and rear Laser jammer. Radar never went of but Laser screamed with a few short pulses.

Texas Hypo came up and said hello with a polite but determined attitude. He walked the car and immediately questioned the unit under the bumper. I told him it was a K40 Laser jammer. He told me that radar jammers were illegal and a federal offense. I explained ot him that it was a laser jammer and not a radar jammer. I politely told him that a radar signal was regulated and controlled by the FCC and that I knew that was a federal violation but that in my case, mine was a laser jammer and that laser was controlled and regulated by the FDA (food and drug admin), and that according to my attorney, a laser jammer was not illegal on U.S. highways. I asked an attorney (pca & Ferrari instructor) months previous to this and that was the definition he gave me.

The officer started out with the intent of giving me a citation and or hauling my off to the station. I politely asked that he verify what I said before taking that position as I felt I was right and would not be amiable to coming back to court 400 miles from Dallas in the event that he was dead wrong. After about 30 minutes of radio chatter and calls to whomever, he stated that there was apparently some authenticity to what I said but he could not expend the time nor have the resources to bring me in and determine what type of device I had installed.

Not sure how specifically correct and accurate that is but that was coming form a great attorney and in my case, it worked in the given situation.

Individual states have made laser jammers illegal and the list is growing. Speeding is illegal also as some of you may have heard That is not the point of my original request though. I simply am looking to see if anyone has installed a LI so that I may learn from them on the install.

I do appreciate the comments and these are some interesting topics, but the merits, legality, and morality of jammers are best left to another thread. Thanks!

Sorry Deckman. I thoguht you were talking about laser interceptors in general.

I am now curious. Where can I find info(Edit...found site)

Looking at the system, it looks very similar to the Escort system. The switch shown in their product phots is to mute/disable jamming. On the Audi, I bought a factory switch and installed in a blank location on the dash. You could source a P-switch for a clean install. Get a momentary switch, similar to PSM. Keep in mind you will want the switch mounted in a quickly accessible location. Don't want to jam-to-gun, etc.

Sure Jack. This product is made in eastern Europe somewhere (can't remember), and there is just one distributer in the US. His name is Cliff, you can look here. If you want all the information you need on all of the systems available go to www.radardetector.net.

LI is expensive but worth it from what I know. You can get either a 2 or 4 diode setup. The 2 diode is used for the front and the 4 setup for front and rear.

You guys might want to ping DeputyDog about the Laser Interceptor unit; he has one on his car and can probably help you out.

I've got a Laser Mask unit waiting to go on the 996. I'd certainly be interested to hear some install tips. My two areas of concern are where to route the wires from the heads mounted on the bumper into the front trunk, and then where to route that wire into the cabin for connection to the control unit. Whoever does this first, post some pics!

What he said (500th post also!).

DeputyDog has the LI installed in his daily driver, unfortunately for us. My DD is barely capable of exceeding the posted speed.

YAYYYY 500 posts! A tribute to my lack of productivity....

DD's is not on his 996 though... I'm putting one on my BMW also, but the wire routing is a cinch. On the 996, I can't find the way from from the bumper into the trunk w/o dropping the bumper. I was told it can be done, but I have not found the secret passage...

just make sure the sensors are level and you'll be fine.
