cheap 996 worth it for track car? talk me out of it
So I've been looking for a track car project. I found this 99' 996 C2 with shady history, I think I might be able to get it for 12k, body looks good, downside is its tiptronic and 3.4L w/ 70k. however I'm thinking I'll put in a 3.6 or 3.8 with manual trans or even just bore out the 3.4 (not sure if thats possible yet, still looking into my options). I've done a few engine installs myself but nothing on a porsche...how difficult is it to drop the engine on these?
Say I spend 20-25k total for the car and some upgrades, wouldn't be bad for some fun at the track? Sure it wouldn't be a gt3, but for the price I'm seriously considering it.
also since i'll be tearing out the insides for track use, was considering getting 997 engine/trans/dme/harness/cluster but probably too much work and way too much $. fun to day dream though

i'd keep looking for a car that is already a manual. the 3.4L can be bored out, and the 3.6 motor can also be put in but since the 1999 3.4L has a cable throttle and the 3.6 cars and up have e-gas, you will need to install the e-gas system as well.
Does sound like a lot of work though when other deals seem to be out there???
was day dreaming about 997 parts. looks like a 3.6 engine/trans would be 10k on the low side...another option would be to just swap the trans and beat on the 3.4L for a while. most 996's are still about 30k, I found one for 21k on ebay
You are soooo not ready for it if you think a 996 will EVER be a cheap track car. Never, never, never - and never! lol.
Relatively easy. Can be done without a lift, and one person if you are careful and have the right equipment. I seem to recall a great write-up on Renntech.
Good luck! For a 996 to be 20-25K all in, you aren't looking at a decent track car. MAYBE a decent street car.
Yup. Fun, but impossible. No way that 997 stuff will fit in your 20K budget. Well, unless you have 20K for those upgrades alone.
