Considering 19" Wheels
In my opinion, if you're considering 19" rims, then you really have to consider a lowered suspension option as the space between the wheels as the fender become air (rather than rubber) due to the reduced sidewall size of the 19" tires. That being the case, you're looking at an alignment anyway.
I went with the X73 lowered sport suspension option on my 04 C4S Cab, (with 19" HREs) and it's been great!

Here's a pic of a 2000 C4 with 19" wheels and H&R Sport Springs... Hope this can help you decide......

as a data point, I believe the rough relationship for every pound of unsprung weight is like adding three pounds of sprung weight. I.e. - if your wheels add 20 pounds, it's like adding 60 pounds in the cockpit.

The dif from going from a 295/30 on an 18 inch rim to a 315/35 on a 19 inch rim is less that half an inch in running diameter (in some tires it will be almost the same).....the side-wall height is what changes more.......understand the circumference of the wheel & tire are very much the same.
Other comments would be.........if you want your car to look more aggressive and low.....first consider ride height, 2nd wheel offset.......lastly, going to 19s. If you go to 19s, watch the road, watch the car in front of you, reverse drop (big lip) rims are more prone to damage in 19s than 18s, mounting 19" rubber on a reverse drop rim is a b#tch, reverse drop 18" rims are a cool way to look big but still have the 'confidence' of 18" rubber (which BTW is what you would want to 'track', not 19s).
Just my opinions.
Good luck to ya
for a narrow body 996, as far as overall diameter is concerned the best "fit" is the 19x8 or 8.5 front with a 235/35/19, the rear a 19x11 with a 305/25/19. Unfortunately, only Pirelli makes this combination of tires.

Great tire and wider track up front
I'm taking the plunge. Check out these wheels I picked up.

No tires yet. These are 8x19 and 11x19 Thinking of 235/35 up front and 295/30 in the back. I'm a little worried about going to a 25 sidewall. Michelin PS2's most likely and yes, I am keeping the stock 18's for the track. I'll put the Michelin Cups on those to start off.
