Common Problem

I had my ignition swapped out twice for the same reason.
Take it to the dealer its covered by your warranty.

Ignition Switch

Same experience/thoughts as the folks above. I actually had mine replaced last week, unfortuntately it was not covered by warranty since I have a 99' year model. Parts & Labor ran around $150. They fixed it while I waited; total time was just a bit more than an hour. I scheduled it at lunch time, so it worked perfect.

Good Luck...

Forgot to mention...

Also, if you are having trouble with your A/C because of the ignition switch issue, try this:

Once the car has been started and if the A/C is not working, turn the key a small amount back to the left, not so far as to kill the engine, but just before that point. This should kick the A/C back on and will help keep you cool while going to the dealer...

Good Luck

Chad, we work on cars again this weekend in San Jose and will be filming more video. Aileen 'Madam No Fear' will be there to take apart a GT2.

Buy new switch. Drive straight from your garage to San Jose. Put new switch in. Drink beer. Jeff

I may do that. The only problem is that I'm on a business trip in Houston. I'm hunting down Enron managers...j/k...I also could not get the switch in time . Thanks for the offer though.

I got it fixed. Thanks for the info guys. Loren and Jeff thanks for the detailed instructions. I had to make my own little "Special tool" to get the little screws out. I actually cross referenced a VW ignition switch and picked one up locally (Yes there are still VW parts in our Carrera's) It was not that hard when you have a cut off wheel and an old little screw driver need to make a tool . The key releases now without a problem and everything works!
Thanks guys
