Need cup holder help?

Can someone give me the dimensions for the center cup holder (thickness?) from their car? I know they're worthless on function, but I'm thinking aesthetics wise here. I want to see if I can fit the cup holder unit in with my double din stereo on my '99? I can mount the stereo at the base of the opening, and thought I could "squeeze" the cup holder unit in at the top (approx. factory location) to cut down on the faceplate size and look. Anyone try this or has the measurements for the cup holder? Thanks!

I have two simple ways for a cup holder in a 996.
1. Go to Wal-Mart and look at their drink holders. In my area there is one you can push down between the seat and console. If you can stand that thought, I can not. I am worried that it might scratch the console or the seat.

2. I got a small bag/organizer from Target (I think, it was a gift) and it has a drink holder on at least one end. Well I simply put this behind the passenger seat and use it in place of a drink holder on the console or dash.

I have never liked the thought of a drink spilling or dripping in the console area.
Best of luck.

I think he wants to add one just to take up space. Rather then having a huge radio bezel.

He admits that they are pretty useless.

I got 2 of the stainless "ultimate" cup holders for xmas from the kids. They sit on the floor next to console and have a metal tab you slide up under the console to stabilize the unit. Works very well and keeps things tidy up top.

not going to happen. They are the same size as the "cubby" and the cd/tape holders. You can't squeeze one in on top of a double din.

Thanks, just the info. I was looking for! I guess I'll have to come up with a plan B for the faceplate "looks". Anyone with any ideas on dressing up a big black border around the stereo???

Not that it will help but I just noticed a Ultimate cupholder on Ebay ending soon....

Now on to the faceplate......How about a swirl like the old trans-ams use to have on their dash. Hmmmmm, then again maybe not.

How much room are we talking about?

I don't quite see the issue. I have a 2001, so the space you're dealing with should be the same as in my center stack. On the bottom, I have the climate control. Above that, I have an open storage cubby. My car originally came with a useless casette holder that I replaced with this storage cubby. Above that, I have a single DIN radio. Above that, I have a double cupholder that was standard on 2001 models, and often retrofitted to 1999-2000 models. So, if you replace the single DIN radio and cupholder above with a double-DIN radio, you're all set. Your center stock should be (bottom up): climate control, storage cubby, double-DIN radio. Note that if your car was originally built with the climate control further up in the center stack, it can moved to the bottom as on 2001 models.

Here is the "gap" I'm talking about above the stereo. I don't want to leave it as a large blank black plastic border around the stereo so thoughts? It's about 1" - 1 1/2" above the stereo.

Yes, now I see the problem. Many have installed a double-DIN radio without the gap that you have. It almost seems as if your radio is sitting too low. I would do a search on this forum and Rennlist. There have been a couple of detailed installations with photos. Perhaps you can PM those who have posted their installations. Good luck.
