To be honest i don't know much about the Porsche family at all! I'm looking at a 2001 Carrera Convertible and I just relized the C4S has a different front and rear bumper.

Anything else im missing? also whats should i look for before purchasing this car?

Thanks in advance!

the c4s is on the turbo body (without the sidevents) so its wider, and all 02's have the newer front end

The C4S is 3.6L with 320hp while the 2001 is 3.4L with 296hp < (or somewhere close)
The C4S has a distintive red reflector strip running across the rear between the tail lights.
The C4S is slightly wider than the C2 or C4, shares the same chassis as the Turbo.
The C4S uses the Turbo's suspension and brakes, as well as front and rear bumpers.
Not sure if it's standard, the C4S has full leather interior including alcantara roofliner.
Tires on the C4S are slightly wider, on 18" solid Turbo Twists wheels.

That's all I can think of now, someone chime in if I miss anything.

It all depends on mileage and condition of the car... I found mine ( a 2002 4S) with 14.6k miles and near perfect condition, still smelled new inside... I paid up for it, but that was the kind of car I was looking for.

The only thing that bugs me about the C4S is that they are considerably heavier than the C2... AWD + the widebody adds a decent chunk of weight.

That said, they definitely look nicer.

The average or even slightly above average driver can't take advantage of the ~200# difference on the straights to overcome the extra cornering ability of the AWD.

I just bought a C4S last weekend and did not really consider the C2. There were a number of reasons why:

1. The C4S has the turbo widebody. You can do all of the mods you want on a C2, but trying to match the look of a wide **** of the turbo is going to be pretty expensive. I think the 2002-2005 C4S is the best looking 911 (except the 959) ever made because of the body, rear reflector, and headlights.

2. PSM is standard and AWD adds to the safety factor. My wife knows that 911s can be widow makers. She wanted me to buy the safest car I could buy. I've had snap oversteer before. I've had snap oversteer that sent me into a tree at 50 mph and totaled the car. I walked away that time, but I was lucky. One week after we got married I was run over on my motorcycle. I did not walk away that time and I still don't walk without pain two years later. So safety was a major factor.

3. Full leather is standard in the C4S and there's something to be said for this. I am still amazed when looking at the car just how much leather "full leather" really means. That's definitely a nice option.

4. Brakes delivered directly from the hand of God.

Excellence magazine always says buy the best, newest Porsche that you can afford. I think there is a lot of wisdom in this statement and that's why I bought a C4S. It's basically the best, newest Porsche that fit within my budget, but even then I kind of stretched it a bit.

The general low asking price that I've seen is around $38K. There's one on Auto Trader around $36K. I've never seen any below that. Now that's just the asking price. I got a couple thousand off of the asking price on my car, so there's always some room for negotiation. The average prices though are up in the 40's. My local dealer has an '04 with 25K miles for $45K and an '05 with 35K miles for $50K.

I bought an '03 with 35K that had an asking price of $45.5K. I thought I got a good deal because my car was well optioned from the factory and then had $28K in extra goodies (body kit, wheels, suspension, etc.) thrown on.

Market values are depressed right now, but the C4S is not fully depreciated yet. As the economy turns around the currently depressed prices may rebound. My local Porsche dealer is already discontinuing their practice of discounting new cars, which will affect the used P-car market. They told me that Porsche cut back on supply to meet current demand. If prices do rebound though they'll eventually come back down again as the cars realize their full depreciation. I didn't want to wait and purchased now while the market is depressed as it could be some time before prices really drop further. Now is certainly a good time to buy as it's a buyer's market and you have tons of leverage. That's why I got a car worth $53K for 20% below the fair market value.

Kirk
