Engine Failure on 996?

Hi,

I am looking to pick up a 996 C2 and was reading some issues with the engine and wanted to get feedback from other 996 owners here. It seems like the issue was primarily on the non-turbo, gt2, gt3 models.

The issues I have been reading:
http://www.devwebsphere.com/porsche/...ne_failed.html
http://www.porscheenginefailure.com/

Look forward to hearing your thoughts. The engine replacement is north of $10k from what I have been reading :-/

Thanks

Most of the problems existed with the early model 99's and 00's. The results are really incredible values if you locate a good one.

Yep the engine dies everyday. We are all so stinking rich we just buy a new one. You have to be RICH to own a Porsche. Minimum credit score is 800 or they turn you away at the dealer.
Then again don't beleive everything you read.

Wow, you bother with the daily replacement? I decided speed wasn't important and did a swap with a Civic motor... thinking if that goes I may think hybrid Prius.

The handling at 45 mph is wicked!

Thanks for the whack in the head. Will do some searches first next time.

The IMS failure which seems to be one of the issues leading to engine failure has a fix or at least upgrade that can be done as a preventative step.
LN Engineering: http://www.lnengineering.com/ims.html

I'll be checking out a clean, low-mi. 99' 996 this week and looking forward to upgrading from my early-90s SUV soon.

David, it's a 1999 C2, clean carfax, <45k, two owners (friend purchased from friend). No mech problems except for a window motor going, not raced/tracked (need to verify again) and was not a daily commuter from what I have gathered.

Are there any specific areas I should visiually check or look out for?

I heard from some owners that it's possible to pay Porsche $3.5k to have it CPOd for 2yrs / 100k, have you heard of this?

Thank you.

If you can get Porsche to CPO it, I'd definitely do it, but I think the car is too old.

Sure you read about getting a PPI (pre purchase inspection)
I think a PPI should show any overrevs... too many of those and you may want to keep looking.

good luck

You'll have to bear with some of the guys - this question comes up a lot and at times, feels like an indictment of our choice in cars and fishing for a reason not to buy the car that we all love (the ones I dislike the most are of the "is-the-996-a-better-car-than-the-blank?"). What you'll find here are that most of the guys love their cars, most of the cars don't have issues, the ones that do have issues, the issues are minor and common to any car of age, and that it's very rare to run into someone that has had a major issue - it's quite likely that a person with a bad experience would avoid a forum where everyone loves the car they had a bad experience with...

Not an excuse, just some insight...

Rudy

The 99's and 01's get bashed on quite frequently and most of the information you hear is all negative. But there are many of us 99-01 owners who have had no engine related problems, take care of our cars, do scheduled maintenance, etc. If the car checks out after a PPI, hasn't beed in a demolition derby and beaten to death by a teenager, they make great cars to own. Check some of the other forums too, you'll see that engine issues happen to all of them too, 99's and 01's just seem to get the majority of the headlines.

From what i have read, if the problem has not appeared by 40 for 45 thousand miles then the problems are extreamily rare.
